Private text messages pulled from Dr. Anthony Fauci's government phone reveal that the former COVID czar quietly raised alarms about a potential link between mRNA vaccines and miscarriage, even as the public was being told everything was perfectly fine. The bombshell messages were first reported after Republican Senators Ron Johnson and Rand Paul dropped them on Monday.
The January 2021 group chat featured Fauci alongside then CDC chief Dr. Rochelle Walensky and Dr. Vivek Murthy, who would go on to serve as Joe Biden's surgeon general. The trio was hashing out what to tell pregnant women about getting vaccinated. Fauci acknowledged that plenty of people experienced serious fever and cytokine reactions following their second shot, and he admitted that this response "theoretically could be associated with miscarriage in the 1st trimester."
Let that sink in for a moment. The top health official in the country was privately telling colleagues about a plausible miscarriage risk while the public messaging remained overwhelmingly reassuring.
Walensky apparently agreed it was worth worrying about, responding that it was "definitely a good point, esp after dose two." Murthy chimed in calling it "a really good point" and mentioned that he had been hearing concerns about mRNA shots potentially causing mutations in developing fetuses.
The very next day, Murthy flagged a World Health Organization recommendation that actually advised against giving Moderna's vaccine to pregnant women due to insufficient data. Fauci pushed back, noting that over 10,000 pregnant women had already received shots with "no issues" and cited guidance from the FDA along with other medical bodies. Murthy then warned that discouraging vaccination just because of limited evidence could seriously damage public confidence.
So behind closed doors, they were wrestling with real uncertainties. The question that Republicans are now screaming from the rooftops is simple. Why weren't everyday Americans given this same level of nuance?
"The text chain released today could have an immediate impact on public health and the principle of informed consent," Johnson's office stated.
The scope of what is still hidden might be even more explosive. Investigators recovered approximately 34,000 texts and 522 voicemails from Fauci's phone. Only three contacts were identified by name. Every other message was tied solely to a phone number. Officials say it remains unclear whether anything was scrubbed from the device.
All of this lands while Fauci is already under intense pressure on Capitol Hill. He recently invoked his Fifth Amendment rights 111 separate times during congressional testimony, despite having received a sweeping preemptive pardon from former President Biden.
Johnson and Paul say they are still combing through thousands of additional messages. If this pregnancy conversation is just the appetizer, Washington better brace itself for the main course. This story is far from over, and the political fallout could be enormous.
