Nothing says "we've got everything under control" quite like the head of the Democratic National Committee reportedly hurling his phone at a junior staffer's desk during a tantrum. Ken Martin, the guy running the whole DNC show, apparently had a frustration moment earlier this month that ended with his mobile device becoming a projectile, according to a report from the New York Times based on conversations with over two dozen Democrats.
The incident allegedly happened while Martin was giving a junior aide a piece of his mind. It resulted in someone filing a formal complaint with the DNC's human resources department, because apparently even political parties have HR departments. Who knew? The kicker is that roughly half a dozen people shared details about what happened, but literally none of them actually saw it go down. Some folks said the phone was launched with force, while others described it more like a gentle desk toss. Tomato, tomahto, am I right?
Martin reportedly sat down with HR officials afterward to have a little chat about his behavior. Both the DNC and Martin refused to comment or do interviews. Shocking restraint from a man who allegedly communicates by throwing electronics.
Martin took over as chairman back in early 2025 after roughly 450 DNC members elected him to a four year term lasting through 2029. Before going national, he ran the Minnesota Democratic Farmer Labor Party for 14 years without losing a single statewide race. So the guy knows how to win elections. Managing his temper around office furniture? That's apparently a different skill set.
But here's where the story gets truly delicious. The phone tossing episode happened against the backdrop of the DNC basically being broke. The committee is sitting on roughly $2 million in debt and had to borrow $15 million just to keep the lights on. They've already shelled out more than $700,000 in interest payments, averaging over $75,000 every month. Starting in January, they'll owe $1.66 million per month in principal repayments. If I were $2 million in the hole and paying that kind of interest, I might throw my phone too.
To make things even more fun, party leadership has reportedly asked certain vendors to just hold off on sending invoices until after the midterm elections. Three people briefed on this arrangement confirmed it. DNC Executive Director Roger Lau called these discussions normal contract negotiations, which is a very creative way to describe asking people not to bill you.
Meanwhile, over on the other side of the aisle, the Republican National Committee is lounging on $128.5 million in cash reserves, and President Trump controls a $400 million super PAC heading into the midterms. So the Democrats are throwing phones while Republicans are swimming in money like Scrooge McDuck. That's quite the contrast heading into what everyone agrees will be a pivotal election cycle.
Maybe Martin should consider switching to a flip phone. They're cheaper to replace.
