A Department of Homeland Security special agent and his wife were found dead at their New Jersey home on July 3 in what authorities are investigating as a murder-suicide, as Conservative Brief reported. Because apparently even the people tasked with keeping the homeland secure cannot always keep their own homes from becoming crime scenes.
Police in Sayreville responded to the couple's residence on Glynn Court around 8 p.m. and found Kelly Latauro, 46, dead inside the home, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office. Her husband, 52-year-old Christopher Latauro, was discovered dead in the backyard. Both had been shot. Authorities believe Christopher was the shooter.
The street was briefly closed from Deerfield Road to Scarlet Drive due to police activity and reopened about 40 minutes later, though officers remained on scene. Nothing says "quiet suburban evening" like your entire block getting cordoned off on the night before Independence Day.
According to NJ101.5, citing DHS records from 2019 and 2020, Christopher was a special agent for the Department of Homeland Security. Authorities have not disclosed what may have led to the violence.
Kelly's sister-in-law Robyn Perlman-Spencer confirmed her death in a Facebook post on July 7, writing a tribute that paints a picture of someone who will be deeply missed. "My beautiful sister in law Kelly Iatauro was senselessly and suddenly taken from us on Friday. Kelly was a bright light- kind, thoughtful, hysterical, inappropriate, and just one of the most amazing people I've ever known. She left a lasting impression on anyone that was lucky enough to know her," Robyn wrote in part.
Investigators are still working to piece together what happened inside the home leading up to the shooting. Neither the Department of Homeland Security nor the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office responded to additional requests for comment.
This is one of those stories where there really is not much to joke about. A woman is dead, a neighborhood is shaken, and a family is left trying to make sense of something senseless. The fact that the suspect carried a federal badge makes it all the more unsettling. You would hope that someone entrusted with that kind of authority and trained in law enforcement would find literally any other way to handle whatever was going on. Instead, a quiet cul-de-sac in Middlesex County became a crime scene.
