So what would push Big John over the edge? During a CNN appearance over the weekend, Fetterman laid out his red line pretty clearly. He pointed to recent primary races where candidates have taken aggressive positions against Israel, and he made a distinction between caring about Palestinian people and what he characterized as outright hostility toward the Israeli state.
In a follow-up conversation with NBC News, Fetterman doubled down, saying that any platform language prohibiting U.S. aid to Israel would be an absolute dealbreaker. He reminded everyone that Democrats have traditionally backed Israel as a crucial ally and the sole democracy in the region. Notably, he kept his options open about where he would land, declining to say whether he would caucus with Republicans or go the independent route.
Naturally, his colleagues are handling this with grace and composure. Just kidding. One anonymous Senate Democrat told NOTUS they are worried about a surprise defection and openly wondered whether Fetterman could even survive a future Democratic primary in Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, nearly 60 percent of Pennsylvania Democrats reportedly want him gone anyway, so maybe the feeling is mutual.
Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland said he had never witnessed a joint fundraising arrangement between a senator and a member of the opposing party, which is apparently something Fetterman has been doing. Representative Chris Deluzio, a progressive Pennsylvania Democrat who has floated the idea of challenging Fetterman in a primary, called that fundraising partnership problematic. Nothing says party unity quite like your own colleagues openly discussing how to replace you.
Former Fetterman chief of staff Adam Jentleson offered an interesting theory, suggesting that a switch might happen if it gave Fetterman outsized influence in Senate power dynamics, especially in situations with razor-thin majorities or high-stakes judicial nominations. Jentleson added that the party could handle the loss over time, which is basically political speak for "we will be fine, probably, eventually, maybe."
Other Democrats tried playing it cool. Senator Peter Welch of Vermont noted that Fetterman still votes with Democrats consistently and holds progressive positions that would make fitting in with Republicans pretty awkward. Senator Martin Heinrich of New Mexico encouraged Fetterman to stick around, pointing to broad agreement on most priorities despite some disagreements.
