There is a certain breed of boldness that transcends normal political shamelessness and enters a realm usually reserved for the guy who shows up empty handed to a potluck and then asks for leftovers to take home. As reported by Trending Views, every single Democrat in Congress voted against the Working Families Tax Cuts one year ago. Not most of them. Not a concerning majority. Every. Single. One. They called the bill "abominable" and demanded its "wholesale repeal."
The bill included no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, no tax on Social Security, a doubled child tax credit, and $1,000 Trump Accounts for every newborn citizen. Republicans passed it without a single Democratic vote. Ninety seven percent of American tax filers received a tax cut. Eighty two billion dollars went back to taxpayers. Ninety six percent of the families who benefited earn under $200,000. Twenty five million workers paid no tax on their overtime.
So naturally, Democrats are now running campaign ads taking credit for the whole thing. Because why not.
Michigan Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet ran taxpayer funded television ads claiming she "passed the Working Families Tax Credit." She voted against it. That is like a goalie bragging about a shutout when they were sitting in the parking lot eating a sandwich during the game.
Arizona Sen. Ruben Gallego introduced legislation to make Trump Accounts permanent but rebranded them "American Dream Accounts" to scrub any trace of their Republican origin. He voted against creating them in the first place. This is the legislative equivalent of slapping your name on someone else's group project after refusing to show up to a single meeting.
Nevada's entire Democratic congressional delegation sent a letter demanding successful implementation of the No Tax on Tips provision for their constituents. They all voted no on the provision. They literally voted to deny their own constituents the thing they are now demanding be implemented correctly. That takes a special kind of nerve.
In Missouri and Kansas, Democratic representatives issued a joint press release celebrating World Cup security funding they had voted against, money that came from a Department of Homeland Security they had repeatedly tried to defund. At some point you have to admire the sheer commitment to the bit.
Without the Working Families Tax Cuts passing, American families would have faced a $5 trillion tax increase, the largest in the nation's history. That was the outcome Democrats voted for. The only reason it did not happen is because Republicans held the line on a party line vote.
Look, politicians taking credit for things they had nothing to do with is as old as politics itself. But there is usually at least a layer of plausible deniability involved. Voting no on the record and then filming a commercial about how you delivered the goods is not spin. It is just hoping nobody checks.
Voters may have short memories. Roll call votes do not.
