Nothing says party unity quite like two of your biggest names publicly picking opposite sides in a Senate race and daring everyone to watch the fireworks. As The American Tribune reported, Elizabeth Warren and Chuck Schumer are basically in a political cage match over Michigan's 2026 Senate primary, and neither one seems interested in backing down.
Here's the setup. Senator Gary Peters is retiring, which means his seat is up for grabs. The August 4th primary will decide whether Democrats go with Rep. Haley Stevens, the establishment favorite backed by Schumer, or Abdul El-Sayed, the progressive firebrand endorsed by Warren, Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar. The winner faces former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers in the general. So naturally, Democrats decided this was the perfect time to have a full blown internal meltdown.
Warren originally threw her support behind state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, but McMorrow dropped out. So Warren pivoted to El-Sayed, giving him a major national boost and essentially telling Schumer's preferred candidate to pound sand. This came right after Sanders and AOC held campaign events with El-Sayed in Michigan, making the whole thing feel less like a primary and more like a progressive rally tour.
Warren went all in with her endorsement, praising El-Sayed for rejecting corporate donations and fighting to remove big money from politics. She highlighted his medical background, his union membership, and his endorsement from the United Auto Workers. She even argued he's the only candidate capable of building enough grassroots energy to actually win in November. Bold claim for a guy who has given establishment Democrats approximately forty seven heart attacks.
Schumer, meanwhile, kept things characteristically brief. He told Punchbowl News back in June that Stevens simply has the strongest shot at winning. That was basically his entire pitch. Short, sweet, and clearly motivated by the fact that El-Sayed's past comments about defunding police have resurfaced, including his call to prevent departments from acquiring military equipment.
But the real spice comes from El-Sayed's statements on Israel. During a CNN appearance in April, he called both Hamas and the Israeli government evil. He labeled Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a war criminal. Then in July, he went further, calling Israel a rogue state and accusing it of genocide and apartheid, while declining to directly affirm that Israel has a right to exist as a Jewish state. For a purple state race, those positions are the political equivalent of juggling flaming torches on a tightrope.
El-Sayed seems completely unbothered by all of it. His take on why party leaders oppose him? They aren't worried he'll lose. They're panicking because they think he'll actually win. Whether that confidence is justified or delusional, we'll find out on August 4th. In the meantime, grab some popcorn, because Democrats are doing the Republicans' campaign work for free.
