The Democratic Party is currently experiencing the political equivalent of a family Thanksgiving dinner where half the table wants capitalism and the other half wants to seize the means of production. According to Conservative Brief, thirteen moderate Democrats just signed a pledge this week declaring their love for strong borders, capitalism, and patriotism, which is apparently now a bold and controversial stance within their own party.
What triggered this dramatic declaration of normalcy? A bunch of democratic socialists just steamrolled Democratic incumbents in primary races in New York and Colorado, and the moderates are basically standing up screaming, "Hey, we still like America, just so everyone knows!"
Rep. Tom Suozzi of New York summed it up by saying the party should be pro capitalism, pro safety, and proud of the country. Which, if you think about it, is a pretty wild thing to have to publicly announce. That's like a restaurant putting out a press release confirming they're still pro food. But here we are in 2025, folks.
Suozzi also pointed out that extremists on both ends of the spectrum are highly organized, while the people in the middle are basically sitting around hoping someone else handles it. Bold strategy, moderates. Really inspiring stuff.
Axios reported that these centrist Democrats are gearing up for "war" against the progressives if they try to hijack legislation on the House floor. One anonymous moderate told the outlet that you "can't just wring your hands on this stuff," which is funny because hand wringing has historically been the moderate Democrat's primary form of exercise.
Another centrist went even further, calling the incoming socialist members "bomb throwers, not problem solvers." Nothing says party unity quite like comparing your new colleagues to demolition experts.
The catalyst for all this internal chaos was Tuesday's New York congressional primaries. DSA members Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez both won competitive races, and progressive Brad Lander knocked out Rep. Dan Goldman. These victories could help build the largest left wing bloc Congress has seen this century if these candidates win in November.
That bloc would reportedly be big enough to torpedo Democratic legislative priorities unless their demands are met, essentially giving progressives veto power over their own party's agenda. Nothing screams teamwork like holding your own side hostage.
Meanwhile, left wing Rep. Delia Ramirez of Illinois told Axios that voters are rejecting establishment loyalty, apparently not realizing that her brand of politics mostly resonates within districts so blue they make the ocean look beige.
The moderates say their Blue Dog coalition plans to form bipartisan alliances to counter the hard left, which is basically the political version of calling your neighbor for backup during a family argument.
And just to make things spicier, Sen. John Fetterman has been openly flirting with leaving the Democratic Party entirely. He said last week he would officially change his affiliation if opposing Israel becomes part of the official Democratic platform. Because apparently this party needed one more subplot in its increasingly chaotic soap opera.
So to recap, Democrats are simultaneously preparing to fight Republicans in 2026 while also gearing up to fight each other. Solid plan, team. Really airtight.
