The House Ethics Committee announced it is looking into allegations of sexual misconduct against Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.).
The panel said it is reviewing claims that Gomez may have violated the Code of Official Conduct by engaging in inappropriate sexual contact with a House staffer. It emphasized that launching and disclosing the investigation doesn’t mean a violation has occurred.
CNN first reported in June that Gomez was under investigation, following a New York Post piece alleging he was seen kissing a younger staffer from another Democrat’s office in 2023.
Gomez told The Hill the interaction was consensual and didn’t break any laws or House rules, though he acknowledged the mistakes have affected those he cares about.
“I appreciate the Committee’s statement that the existence of an inquiry does not itself indicate that any violation occurred. I respect the Committee’s process and am confident that a full and impartial review of the facts will bear that out. I stand ready to cooperate with the Ethics Committee inquiry and provide it with whatever information it might need. Out of respect for my family and the ongoing process, I will have no further comment,” Gomez said.
