A left-wing comedian is getting absolutely torched online after she allegedly delivered a cake with a hateful message to the Capitol Hill office of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, and the whole thing is as classless as it sounds. Elizabeth Booker Houston apparently thought this was peak comedy, targeting Graham's younger sister Darline Graham Nordone on the same day Nordone was sworn in to finish her brother's Senate term.
Graham passed away at 71 following what his office called a brief and sudden illness, leaving Washington in shock. A preliminary autopsy pointed to an aortic dissection resulting from arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with official findings still pending toxicological and microscopic testing. He had been working in the Senate right up until his final moments and was actually booked to appear on NBC's Meet the Press the morning after he died.
So what did Houston do to mark Nordone's somber first day? She posted a photo on X showing a cake with white frosting, blue icing roses, and a printed photo of Graham smiling in a suit and tie. Across the top in big blue letters was the word "CONGRATUDOLENCES," a charming mashup of congratulations and condolences. Her accompanying post read that Graham is "burning in hell" and that Nordone is now "working for the devil." Real Hallmark material right there.
What makes this especially awful is the personal history involved. Graham essentially raised Nordone after both of their parents died when they were young. So she wasn't just mourning a sibling. She was grieving the person who stepped up as her caretaker during childhood. But sure, send a novelty cake.
Houston never actually confirmed whether the office accepted her baked masterpiece or whether Nordone ever laid eyes on it, but she promoted the supposed delivery far and wide to her followers. A handful of supporters cheered her on, with one person writing that she was "truly doing god's work" and another saying they wanted to grow up to be just like her. Aspirational stuff.
The overwhelming response, however, was not so kind. One critic suggested Houston needed a new hobby, adding that if they had been present, she would have been "wearing her cake." Another person pointed out the obvious, noting that nobody was going to see the thing except the intern who tossed it in the garbage, making it a complete waste of time and money.
Perhaps the most succinct takedown came from someone who admitted they weren't even a fan of Graham but still called the stunt ridiculous, writing that Houston's hatred was "rotting your brain." Hard to argue with that diagnosis.
Nordone was officially sworn in on Tuesday to serve out the remainder of her brother's vacant term. One can only hope her second day on the job involved fewer pastry-based attacks from strangers on the internet.
