Al Mottur, a former Hillary Clinton advisor and Democratic fundraising bundler, went on camera this week and said what conservatives have been screaming into the void since roughly the Obama administration. According to USA Journal, Mottur described far left members of his own party as ideologues who do not love America. A Democrat insider using the word "communist" to describe fellow Democrats. Somebody check on the Weather Channel because it might actually be snowing in July.
Mottur's exact words: "These people, they're not crazy, they're ideologues. They don't love America, let me say that. A lot of these people do not love America." He continued: "I'm not team Democrat, I'm team America. And if we have people in our party who are so far Left, that they are saying we don't want to protect people from crime, well, that's just absurd. And, by the way, we're not going to win a national election, let alone an election in Michigan, if that's our position."
Everything he said is factually correct. It is also approximately ten years past the expiration date for being considered a brave observation. One social media user responded with a question that could not have been more on the nose: "Why didn't you say anything in 2018?" Fair point. Back then, raising these concerns got you labeled a conspiracy theorist by the same establishment class Mottur belongs to.
Mottur's argument is partly strategic. A party that openly opposes protecting citizens from crime cannot win national elections. It cannot win swing states. It cannot win a student council race at a school where parents actually vote. All true. All things that were equally true when the Democratic establishment was busy rolling out the red carpet for DSA endorsed candidates, progressive caucus wish lists, and anyone with enough activist energy to fill a rally.
That is the part Mottur still dances around. The DSA did not break into the Democratic Party through a window. It walked through the front door with a casserole and was offered the master bedroom. Years of accommodating, platforming, and funding far left candidates produced exactly what you would expect: far left results. The progressive wing did not hijack the party. It accepted an engraved invitation.
The DSA's own materials describe their end goal as full communism. Not the cuddly Scandinavian kind with free healthcare and excellent public transit. Actual communism. Candidates running in Democratic primaries this cycle have openly identified as communists. Nobody is hiding the ball here except apparently the donor class, which is now acting shocked that the leopard they adopted is eating faces.
Mottur says he is team America. Good for him. But giving alarmed interviews is the political equivalent of posting a concerned Instagram story during a hurricane. If he wants to actually move the needle, he has the resources and the Rolodex to back candidates who will fight the DSA instead of handing it the microphone.
Conservatives have been making this exact argument for years. The only thing that changed this week is that a Clinton insider finally agreed with them on camera. Welcome to the party, Al. Figuratively speaking, of course. Your actual party might be a lost cause.
