Nothing spices up a real estate listing quite like an active death investigation.
A person was found dead from a gunshot wound at a multi-family rental property in Boston's Mattapan neighborhood, and the home happens to be owned by Conan Harris, the husband of U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA). The property at 25 Malta St. was listed for sale at $1.15 million at the time of the incident, which is really going to complicate those open house showings. As Trending Politics News reported, an autopsy was performed Sunday morning and confirmed the cause of death was a gunshot wound, though Boston police have not classified it as a homicide.
Boston police responded to the scene on Saturday at approximately 1:52 p.m. after receiving a radio call for a person shot at the address. Meanwhile, another officer at a station in Hyde Park took a walk-in report about the same incident, with the victim reportedly still on scene. Officers arrived and found the victim deceased in a bedroom of apartment number two inside the multi-family home. The case was reclassified as a death investigation.
Sergeant Detective John Boyle described it as a "death investigation" being handled by the city's homicide unit. By Sunday afternoon, police said they had no additional information to share. The victim has not been publicly identified, and no details about suspects or circumstances have been released. So basically, we know someone died from a gunshot wound in a bedroom and that is about the extent of it.
The property itself is a seven to eight bedroom multi-family home built in 1910, featuring approximately 2,713 square feet and four bathrooms. City records list Harris as the owner, with an assessed value north of $919,000. Pressley and Harris do not live there. They reside in Boston's Hyde Park neighborhood, which is relevant because owning rental property while serving in Congress is perfectly legal, even if it does invite awkward headlines like this one.
A spokesperson for Pressley confirmed the property is a rental and issued a statement. "The Congresswoman extends her deepest condolences to the impacted family," the spokesperson said.
The realtor for the property told WCVB that the tenants "have resided there for a while," though she did not specify the exact duration. According to the Boston Globe, a neighbor who has lived on the street for 10 years said tenants occupied each floor of the home, including high school-aged teenagers. Another neighbor said she did not hear anything unusual earlier in the day but expressed concern for her children.
As of now, the investigation remains open, the victim remains unidentified publicly, and that $1.15 million asking price is going to need one heck of a creative listing description.
