Bakersfield, California, a city most people associate with oil fields and country music, is now flirting with the idea of becoming a sanctuary city. Because apparently every municipality in California has to take a turn doing this, like some kind of progressive potluck where everyone brings the same dish.
As The American Tribune reported, the proposal was brought up during a recent city council meeting, backed by the Kern County Young Democrats. Left-wing activists urged officials to declare sanctuary status following three deaths during ICE arrests this month and immigration sweeps that have been taking place in Kern County since January 2025.
Vice Mayor Manpreet Kaur and Councilman Andrae Gonzales both expressed support, though they had different approaches. Kaur asked City Attorney Virginia "Ginny" Gennaro to come to the next meeting with guidance on organizing a Transparent Review of Unjust Transfers and Holds forum. Yes, they already have an acronym for it: TRUTH. Because nothing says serious governance like a backronym that sounds like it was workshopped by a marketing team.
According to The New York Post, this would let local governments examine whether law enforcement agencies helped ICE access individuals in custody over the past year.
Gonzales, meanwhile, referred the matter to the council's Laws and Legislation Committee and described federal immigration enforcement as "nothing short of, you know, terrorizing our neighborhoods and our communities, immigrant communities, and frankly, many of our citizens who are also people of color." He added that the city needs to send "a clear message to our community and to the rest of the country" that every tax-paying community member deserves dignity.
Several residents weighed in. Manny Ramirez, a longtime Bakersfield resident, asked officials to revisit the issue at the next meeting and quoted the last words of a man fatally shot by an ICE officer a week prior. Lindsey Parker urged the council to protect individuals who have settled in the city, and Charlotte O'Brien called Bakersfield a "city of immigrants" while pushing officials to reduce the impact of federal enforcement operations.
Kaur also revealed she had been barred from touring a local immigrant detention center, adding that local residents' concerns mattered more to her "than someone's road in front of their home needs to be repaved." That is a bold stance for a city official to take publicly. Somewhere a pothole is weeping.
Not everyone was on board, though. Councilman Larry Koman pointed out that Governor Gavin Newsom already established that Sacramento will not let local law enforcement cooperate with federal immigration authorities, making additional local action redundant. "I don't want to see any time spent ... developing a sanctuary policy until it comes back to the City Council for discussion," Koman said. In other words, the state already did the thing you want to do, so maybe we can spend that council time on the roads Vice Mayor Kaur just deprioritized.
