There are bad excuses, there are terrible excuses, and then there is claiming your ex agreed to let you break into their home with a knife because of a "subliminal message on Instagram." That is a new one, folks.
Brianna Westbrook, 41, a former vice chair of the Arizona Democratic Party and multiple-time political candidate, was arrested on July 10, 2026, after allegedly forcing her way into her former partner's Phoenix home while carrying a knife and duct tape, as The American Tribune reported. The former partner called police after the two allegedly wrestled until Westbrook pushed the victim onto a couch. The victim screamed and asked Westbrook "to stop" before the suspect fled.
Now here is where the story really goes off the rails. When officers detained Westbrook, she tried calling it a "big misunderstanding." She then told cops the whole thing was a "scene" the two were acting out. The victim, for their part, told police they never agreed to any such scene.
Westbrook reportedly elaborated that she had a knife and tape because the two were "into BDSM," according to the Phoenix New Times. She further claimed the encounter was an "agreed to re-enact a scene where Westbrook scares the victim to help her deal with prior childhood trauma of abuse" and that consent was communicated via a "subliminal message on Instagram." She also said the knife was fake. Officers who executed a search warrant allegedly found "a knife, duct tape, and gloves," according to News 12.
So to recap the defense: it was consensual trauma reenactment therapy, agreed upon through subliminal Instagram communication, involving a fake knife that police nonetheless found during a search. If you are keeping score at home, that is approximately zero parts of the story that line up.
Westbrook was booked into the county jail on a $15,000 bond. A police questionnaire connected to the arrest indicated officers checked boxes noting a history of domestic violence with increasing "frequency/intensity." Despite that, Maricopa County Superior Court records show no previous criminal charges.
Westbrook became the highest ranking transgender official in the state Democratic Party and ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2018 (losing the seat to Republican Debbie Lesko) and lost a 2022 primary for Arizona's 5th Legislative District. She was nominated in 2024 to fill a vacant legislative seat but was not appointed by the county board of supervisors. She was also an organizer for the Democratic Socialists of America.
Look, everyone deserves their day in court and these are allegations at this point. But if your legal strategy involves the phrase "subliminal message on Instagram," you might want to start workshopping a Plan B with your attorney.
