Michigan's freshly minted Democratic Senate nominee just laid all his cards on the table, and folks, it's spicy.
Abdul El-Sayed, the DSA-backed firebrand who shocked the political world by snagging the nomination, sat down with Jake Tapper on CNN's State of the Union this past Sunday and basically declared war on the Trump Administration. As Trending Politics reported, El-Sayed made crystal clear that launching partisan investigations into Team Trump would be job number one if he wins in November and Democrats reclaim the Senate majority.
Let that marinate for a second. Not inflation. Not jobs. Not fixing roads. Nope. Investigations.
Now, to be fair, El-Sayed did mention his campaign was built on three pillars: removing corporate cash from politics, boosting working people's wallets, and passing Medicare for all. But the very next breath out of his mouth was all about accountability and subpoena power.
He told Tapper that a Democratic majority would grant them the authority to drag administration officials before Senate committees to grill them on everything from tariff refund decisions to public health rollbacks. He specifically named RFK Jr., calling him out over what he described as the gutting of public health infrastructure through DOGE-style cuts.
Then came the quote of the century. El-Sayed actually said that people across Michigan are now "dodging lettuce" because of fears about explosive diarrhea, something he quipped nobody ever imagined would result from electing Donald Trump. You truly cannot make this stuff up.
Beyond the investigation talk, El-Sayed also painted a broader vision. He wants to use Senate control to build what he called a "runway" for a future president in 2028 who would crack down on massive corporations, enforce antitrust laws, overhaul the tax system to shift burdens away from regular folks onto billionaires, and champion organized labor.
Here's where things get really interesting politically. El-Sayed pulled off a genuine upset on August 4 when he narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary. Stevens had some seriously heavy hitters backing her, including Governor Gretchen Whitmer, retiring Senator Gary Peters, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, plus a mountain of outside spending. El-Sayed beat all of that.
Now he squares off against Republican nominee and former Rep. Mike Rogers in what could be one of the most consequential Senate battles in the country. Recent polling shows an extremely tight contest. Some surveys give Rogers a slight advantage while others show a virtual dead heat. Control of the entire Senate could literally hinge on this single race.
So buckle up, Michigan. This is going to be an absolute political cage match from now until November, and El-Sayed just told everyone exactly what he plans to do with the keys if voters hand them over.
