Well folks, it turns out that asking people to prove who they are before voting is about as controversial as asking someone to show their license before buying a beer. Which is to say, not controversial at all, unless you happen to be an elected Democrat in the United States Senate.
A Fox News poll conducted July 17 through July 20, as USA Journal reported, found that 83% of registered voters are totally on board with requiring photo ID that proves citizenship before someone can register to vote. Seventy-seven percent want it required before casting a ballot too. These numbers are so one-sided they make a globetrotters game look competitive.
But here is where it gets really fun. Among Democratic voters, 72% support requiring ID for registration and 62% want it for voting. Hispanic voters back it at 85%. Voters under 30 are in at 82%. So basically every single demographic group that Democratic politicians love to trot out as potential victims of so-called racist voter suppression actually wants voter ID by massive margins. Awkward!
Fox anchor Bret Baier called the numbers "pretty overwhelming" on air, which is the political analyst equivalent of saying water is wet. Conservative commentator Ben Domenech from The Federalist was genuinely confused about why Republicans are not screaming about this from every rooftop in America. "This is classic Republican politics," he said. "You find 80/20 issues and you lean into them as hard as you can. This is stuff the American people believe is rational and reasonable."
So why is nothing happening? Blame the world's most exclusive retirement community, also known as the United States Senate. The SAVE America Act already passed the House with a 218 to 213 vote, but a cloture vote on March 26 failed 53 to 47. They needed 60 votes because apparently the filibuster threshold is more sacred than the will of 83% of Americans. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has refused to touch the filibuster rules, which means Democratic senators can keep blocking a bill that their own voters overwhelmingly support without breaking a sweat.
Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas has proposed forcing separate votes on voter ID, proof of citizenship, and mail ballot restrictions. The idea is simple: make every single Democratic senator go on the record voting against something that 85% of Hispanic voters and 82% of young Americans actively want. Make them look their constituents in the eye and explain that one.
This is essentially the political equivalent of an open net in hockey, and somehow the puck is just sitting there while everyone stares at it. The poll surveyed over a thousand registered voters across the political spectrum right after Trump's primetime address on election integrity. The support is historic, bipartisan, and about as clear as polling data ever gets.
But sure, let's keep pretending this is a controversial topic. That seems to be working great for everyone.
