3.5 Million New Businesses Filed in 6 Months, Doomers in Shambles

Remember when every cable news panel was absolutely certain that tariffs and trade uncertainty would turn the American economy into a smoking crater? Well, someone forgot to tell the 3.5 million people who started new businesses in the first half of 2026.

According to a report from Registered Agents Inc., a business formation service, the United States saw 3,493,381 new business formations in the first six months of the year. As USA Journal noted, that figure represents a 12% year-over-year increase, with 442,000 more new businesses than the same period in 2025. June alone clocked 548,000 new formations, which actually beat the post-pandemic boom month of June 2021. So apparently the vibes are good out there, despite what your favorite doom-scrolling politicians have been telling you.

Now here is the thing that makes this number more interesting than your average economic stat. Consumer confidence surveys measure feelings. Business formations measure actions. Nobody fills out paperwork, opens a business bank account, and takes on personal financial risk because they think the economy is about to fall into a volcano. You do that because you looked at the landscape and decided the juice was worth the squeeze. Three and a half million Americans grabbed the juicer.

The geographic breakdown is where it gets really fun. Oregon led all states with a 53% year-over-year increase in new business formations, driven by construction, manufacturing, and hospitality. Mississippi came in at 46%, and North Dakota at 44%. These are not Silicon Valley tech bros launching another app that delivers artisanal water to your dog. This is Main Street America, the kind of places where people build actual things with actual materials.

The broader numbers support the optimism. Inflation dropped 0.4% in June, the biggest single-month decline in over six years. Private payrolls are running ahead of the Biden-era pace. Manufacturing is expanding. Toyota committed $3.6 billion to Texas. TSMC committed $265 billion to Arizona. Wages are going up. If this is what economic collapse looks like, somebody needs to update the dictionary.

To be fair, new business formations alone do not tell you how many of those businesses will still be around in two years. A lot of LLCs get filed by people with big dreams and questionable business plans (we have all seen the candle companies). But as a directional indicator of where people think things are headed, 3.5 million is not a number you can just wave away with a cable news segment about how everything is terrible.

The people who were predicting an economic apocalypse every single day are now stuck explaining why millions of Americans apparently did not receive the panic bulletin. Maybe the fax machine was broken.
