Well, well, well. Turns out all those conspiracy theories about coordinated legal attacks on Trump were actually just... accurate observations. According to a report from USA Journal, no fewer than 22 Democratic state attorneys general formed a covert legal alliance called the Project for Federal Accountability, and they started signing on seven whole months before Trump beat Kamala Harris in the election.
The initial signatures hit the dotted line on April 28, 2024, back when Joe Biden was still the guy supposedly running for reelection. Thirteen additional AGs piled on through May and June. The whole thing was stamped "Privileged & Confidential Common Interest Agreement," which is fancy lawyer talk for "please don't let anyone see what we're doing."
So what exactly were these legal eagles up to? Oh, just casually dividing up research topics, building a shared library of pre-written legal briefs, and combing through the Project 2025 policy document looking for things to sue over. Keep in mind, Trump had not signed anything. He had not issued any executive orders. He was not president. The man was literally just a candidate, and they already had the lawsuits gift-wrapped and ready to go like Christmas presents nobody asked for.
Since inauguration day, Democratic AGs have filed roughly 100 lawsuits against the Trump administration. California's Rob Bonta has participated in 82 of them. Colorado's Phil Weiser tagged along for 75. Washington's Nick Brown, who has reportedly been threatening journalists looking into COVID daycare fraud in his state, joined 70.
Bonta's defense is genuinely hilarious. He says this is all "apolitical" and that Trump simply needs to "follow the law" if he wants to avoid getting sued. Imagine signing a secret agreement to coordinate lawsuits against someone who isn't even in office yet and then calling it apolitical with a straight face. Give that man an Oscar.
Even folks who aren't exactly right-wing pundits raised their eyebrows. Retired Connecticut Judge Thomas Moukawsher found the coalition's name amusing, calling it "just a little strange." Former Utah AG Mark Shurtleff, a Republican who frequently votes for Democrats, described the secrecy as "not normal at all."
Now let's talk about who's footing the bill for this legal extravaganza. California has already torched $19 million and authorized another $25 million. New Jersey slipped $1 million into its state budget specifically for two new staff positions devoted entirely to this coalition's work. Taxpayers across blue states are bankrolling a coordinated legal offensive that was planned before anyone even cast a ballot.
The go-to talking point has always been that these lawsuits are about upholding legal principles. But a document from April 2024 makes that claim look about as credible as a three-dollar bill. This was organized resistance, quietly assembled across state lines, bankrolled by taxpayers who had zero idea it was happening, and aimed at a guy whose biggest crime at that point was being the presumptive Republican nominee.
Nothing screams "rule of law" quite like secretly plotting lawsuits against someone who hasn't done anything yet.
