(Crankers) Sen. Mazie Hirono implies that making future FBI agents do a single pull-up is “harsh.”
She tried suggesting that it’s harsh on women because they have obvious physical/physiological differences and can’t do pull-ups.
Hirono is incorrect when she suggests women can’t do pull-ups.
The current FBI website says the following about pull-up testing as part of the requirement:
Starting in November 2025, pull-ups will be a required event for all candidates. Start training now to maximize your scoring potential! See the training section below for more information.
The candidate hangs from a horizontal bar. Hands need to be wider than the shoulders—but no more than two hand-widths outside the shoulders—with palms turned away from the face and arms fully extended. The candidate flexes his or her arms and pulls the body upward until the chin is higher than the bar. There can be no swinging or jerking of the body or use of the legs in an effort to propel the body upward. The candidate then lowers their body back to the hanging position with arms fully extended. This is a continuous-motion exercise.
For TRP candidates, you must score a minimum of 1 point in each of the five events for a total of 20 points. The minimum standard to score 1 point in this event is: Female range: 1 Male range: 2–3
Hirono had a conversation with FBI Director Kash Patel about the physical requirements of the FBI:
Hirono: “Are you requiring these kinds of pull-ups?”
Patel: “If you wanna chase down a bad guy and put him in handcuffs, you better be able to do a pull-up.”
Hirono: “The reason I ask is that there are concerns about whether or not being able to do these kinds of harsh pull-ups is really required of FBI agents.”
Patel: “Doing one pull-up is not harsh.”
Also worth noting is that Mazie Hirono purposely remained silent when the late Sen. Daniel Inouye faced multiple sexual misconduct allegations throughout his career.
