Gavin Newsom’s Prop 50 passes, but CA Republicans fire back with legal challenge

(Crankers) The Democrat Governor who loves hair gel had his fancy Prop 50 pass in the votes, but almost immediately a lawsuit was filed by the California GOP to fight it.

And you thought Gavin Newsom had enough problems running his state into the ground? Nope, there’s more in the form of a lawsuit that will probably drag out way longer than it should, like many legal cases.

Gov. Newsom was sued over Proposition 50 by the California Republican Party and a group of 19 voters because they allege the new congressional maps created by the measure are an unconstitutional racial gerrymander.

Hold on though… 19 voters? Like, how are they even relevant? It’s 19 people. Gavin could find 20 illegal immigrants to counter that if he really wanted to.

Moving on… The plaintiffs claim the map-drawers used race, specifically favoring Hispanic/Latino voters, as the “predominant factor” in creating new district boundaries.

They argue that such race-based districting is only permissible under the Voting Rights Act (VRA) if there is evidence that a minority group is unable to elect its preferred candidates due to a white majority voting as a bloc, a condition the lawsuit claims does not exist in California.

Opponents also call the measure a partisan “power grab” by Democrats, designed to create up to five new Democratic-leaning seats to counter Republican-led redistricting efforts in states like Texas.

The lawsuit seeks to block the new maps from being used in the 2026 midterm elections, which would keep the prior maps drawn by the independent Citizens Redistricting Commission in place
