A women’s shelter recently opened on the Upper West Side of New York City, located next to a children’s playground.
Residents have expressed alarm over alleged incidents involving women at the shelter, including being seen naked while speaking to children, engaging in drug use, getting into fights, and leaving drug paraphernalia in public areas. Parents have reported calling 911 in response to these situations.
Neighbors claim to have provided photos and videos showing these issues, from public nudity and altercations to profanity in the streets and discarded bottles and marijuana cartridges in the nearby park, stating the neighborhood has never looked like this before. Critics argue that society should not tolerate such behavior, especially when taxpayer money is funding it.
They contend these individuals should face incarceration rather than be housed in shelters.
The nonprofit organization managing the shelter reportedly receives over $100 million annually from taxpayers and holds a $500 million four-year contract with the NYC Department of Homeless Services to operate the 200-bed facility.
