Well folks, Wisconsin politics just got spicy enough to melt cheese curds. Democratic Socialist Francesca Hong, who won the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in Wisconsin, stood up at a rally on Sunday and told supporters she would meet ICE agents with "the force and fury required to keep us all safe." As USA Journal reported, this is someone who wants to be in charge of the Wisconsin National Guard, the State Patrol, and the entire executive branch of state government. Just casually promising to deploy force against federal law enforcement officers. No big deal!
The crowd responded by chanting "Block ICE," because apparently that's what passes for a policy platform these days. Hong has already pledged to turn Wisconsin into a sanctuary state and has floated the idea of using the National Guard against immigration enforcement. So at least she's consistent in her escalation, like a video game boss who keeps getting more aggressive with each level.
Now here's where the irony gets so thick you could spread it on toast. This is the same political party that spent years holding January 6th hearings about dangerous rhetoric. The same folks who launched congressional investigations into political speech and classified angry school board parents as potential domestic terrorists. Their gubernatorial nominee in America's Dairyland just used the words "force and fury" to describe how she plans to greet federal agents who are literally doing their jobs. The self awareness is truly breathtaking in its complete absence.
The timing is particularly interesting considering that assaults on ICE officers have reportedly surged by 1,300 percent during this period of heated anti-ICE rhetoric from the left. A federal building in New York City was firebombed last month. Facilities in Portland were attacked on multiple occasions. But sure, let's keep cranking up the temperature on that particular stove.
Meanwhile, Border Czar Tom Homan has been issuing warnings to sanctuary mayors and governors that arrests could be coming their way. So this should make for a really fun standoff that nobody asked for.
Oh, and lest you think Hong might have just gotten carried away in the moment, she also called for defunding the police during a debate, which was captured on video and spread across the internet like wildfire. Her entire campaign is basically built around opposing immigration enforcement. She won the primary, meaning a plurality of Wisconsin Democratic voters looked at all of this and gave her a thumbs up.
Republicans are probably already cutting campaign ads as we speak, and honestly, Hong handed them the footage on a silver platter. Every competitive legislative race in Wisconsin just got a free opposition research gift wrapped with a bow. The only remaining question is whether Wisconsin voters want their next governor picking fights with federal law enforcement, or maybe, just maybe, focusing on things like potholes and property taxes.
