A California sheriff is sitting on 650,000 ballots and absolutely refusing to give them back.
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco grabbed the ballots during an investigation into the 2025 special election, and now the state's highest court is trying to figure out if he's allowed to keep them. Democratic Attorney General Rob Bonta wants them returned immediately. Bianco essentially told him to pound sand. As Conservative Brief reported, the California Supreme Court heard oral arguments Monday in what has become the most dramatic custody battle in the Golden State that doesn't involve a celebrity divorce.
At the heart of this legal cage match is Proposition 50, a congressional redistricting measure that passed statewide by over 3.4 million votes in November 2025. That's not exactly a squeaker. But Bianco claims his investigators found discrepancies between physical ballot records and what voting machines spit out, which is the kind of allegation that makes election officials sweat through their business casual.
"How strange, that now we have evidence that the machines counted something different than the ballots that we have, and an Attorney General runs in to stop that investigation," Bianco said outside the courthouse, radiating the energy of a man who definitely rehearsed that line in the mirror.
To be clear, Bianco's claims about discrepancies are allegations, not proven facts, and the certified statewide result still stands.
Bonta, meanwhile, is pointing to the California constitution like a parent pointing at a chore chart. He insists the law gives him supervisory authority over local sheriffs. "He can read, he knows what it says," Bonta told reporters, which is the politest way anyone has ever called someone literate and insubordinate in the same breath.
Bianco's attorney, Bradley Hertz, says the sheriff is merely "safeguarding" the ballots "as a custodian for the court." That's a fancy way of saying they're locked up somewhere in Riverside County like the Ark of the Covenant at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
The sheriff himself offered a legal interpretation of Bonta's authority that basically boils down to: the AG can make me do my job, but he can't make me stop doing it. "I did this, and this was legal," Bianco declared. "They just don't like the route I chose." Somewhere, a constitutional law professor just developed a twitch.
This local throwdown is happening against a national backdrop of election security battles. The U.S. Supreme Court just greenlit revised mail voting restrictions from the Trump administration. Federal officials also demanded roughly 865,000 ballots from Wayne County, Michigan, earlier this year. Democratic officials there also pushed back.
So basically, ballot custody disputes are the hottest trend in American governance right now.
The California Supreme Court didn't issue an immediate ruling Monday, meaning those 650,000 ballots remain in Bianco's loving embrace while the justices take their sweet time deliberating. Stay tuned, because this showdown is far from over.
