President Trump is apparently willing to grab a folding chair and simply wait out two Republican senators who are blocking his Attorney General nominee. As Trending Politics reported, the president floated the idea of temporarily pulling Acting AG Todd Blanche's nomination and resubmitting it once Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina are no longer warming their Senate seats.
That is genuinely one of the most petty and hilarious power moves in modern political history. "Oh, you won't vote for my guy? Cool, I'll just wait until you're gone." It's like telling someone at a restaurant you'll order dessert after their shift ends because you don't like their attitude.
The whole thing went down Thursday after Cornyn and Tillis refused to advance Blanche's nomination through the Senate Judiciary Committee. Trump took to Truth Social to announce, in classic fashion, that he has "no objection" to yanking the nomination temporarily and resubmitting it once the two senators have packed up their offices.
Here's where it gets even more entertaining. The two senators don't actually have a problem with Blanche himself. Their beef is with Trump's settlement agreement involving the IRS over the unauthorized disclosure of his tax returns. That settlement originally included a proposed $1.776 billion "anti-weaponization" fund, because apparently we're naming government slush funds after the year America declared independence now. The Justice Department has since scrapped that fund, but Cornyn and Tillis want written guarantees it won't come back from the dead like a zombie in a horror sequel. They also want changes to provisions about future IRS audits of Trump and his family.
Cornyn fired back after Trump's comments, insisting that the president is wrong if he thinks only two senators share these concerns. Bold strategy, telling the guy who just threatened to outlast you that you're not alone in your opposition.
Meanwhile, Trump was busy showering Blanche with praise, calling him a "STAR" with the potential to become one of the greatest Attorneys General ever. That's quite the performance review for someone whose nomination is currently stuck in legislative quicksand.
Trump also decided to twist the knife on both senators' political futures, claiming he refused to endorse either one and that their "political careers have been ended" by his actions. And honestly, the receipts kind of back him up on this one. Cornyn lost his Republican primary this year to Trump's preferred candidate, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Tillis, meanwhile, chose not to run for another term. So both are essentially lame ducks waddling toward the exit.
So Trump's grand strategy boils down to this: why fight when you can simply wait for your opponents to leave the building? It's the political equivalent of letting the clock run out.
