Trump Threatens To Freeze Out Cornyn And Tillis Over AG Nomination War

Buckle up, folks, because the GOP civil war just got absolutely nuclear.

President Trump is locked in a scorching feud with two Republican senators from his own party, and he is showing zero signs of cooling off. As The American Tribune reported, Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina blocked the Senate Judiciary Committee from moving forward on the confirmation of acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. And Trump? He basically told them he'll wait them out.

The president took to Truth Social with a message that was part threat, part victory lap. He said if the two senators refuse to approve Blanche, he'll simply keep him serving in an acting capacity and then resubmit the nomination after both lawmakers leave office next year. Why next year? Because Trump says Cornyn already lost his primary bid, and Tillis quit. The president openly stated that both men are angry because he refused to endorse them for 2026.

But here's where things get really spicy. Trump also said he would push aggressively to get what he calls the Anti-Weaponization Bill passed. This is tied to a massive $1.8 billion fund that was announced earlier this year as part of a settlement from Trump's lawsuit against the IRS. The Justice Department said it would administer the fund, which was designed to compensate people who claim they were unfairly targeted by the legal system. Critics immediately slammed it, saying the money would primarily benefit Trump allies and individuals connected to the Capitol riot in 2021. A federal judge ended up blocking the entire thing.

Corynn and Tillis want specific changes put in writing before they'll vote yes on Blanche. Their demands include killing the Anti-Weaponization fund entirely and tightening up language around tax protections.

Trump seemed to acknowledge that the fund is currently on ice, telling reporters at Camp David that it's essentially finished, but adding that he wishes it weren't. That comment opened the floodgates.

Tillis fired back on X with some seriously heated language. He accused the president of planning to "resurrect the payout pot for punks" through either a new fund or congressional legislation. He also predicted that a majority of Senate Republicans would oppose such a bill. Tillis called Blanche qualified for the job but said his confirmation is now in jeopardy because of what he called a reversal from the White House. He expressed hope that everything could be resolved by Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley rescheduled the vote on Blanche's nomination. A committee spokesperson said Grassley wants the nomination to succeed and that the delay gives the White House additional time to lock down the necessary votes.

So basically we've got a sitting president playing political chicken with members of his own party, threatening to outlast them in office, and two senators daring him to try. This is the kind of drama Hollywood scriptwriters couldn't even dream up. Grab the popcorn, because Tuesday is going to be absolutely wild.
