Donald Trump believes Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is getting ready to run for president. The 45th and 47th president made the bold prediction during a visit to Long Island on Friday, according to reports, claiming the progressive congresswoman from New York is quietly repositioning herself for a White House campaign.
So what tipped him off? Apparently, AOC's recent comments on ABC's "This Week" caught his attention. The firebrand lawmaker called the progressive activism wave from 2019 and 2020, often dubbed "Woke 1," outright "crazy." That is a jaw-dropping pivot from someone who built her entire brand on that very movement.
When reporters asked Trump directly if he thought the congresswoman was laying groundwork for a presidential bid, his answer was simple. "I think so." He then went further, saying she and other Democrats are scrambling to walk back their most extreme left-wing positions. "They're all saying the same thing," Trump declared. "They're all trying to disavow themselves from saying about crime and all, we love sanctuary cities."
Trump zeroed in specifically on the sanctuary city issue, predicting those policies will collapse because they have been, in his words, "a disaster." He pointed out that AOC was once a vocal champion of those protections.
Here is where it gets spicy, though. AOC has not actually abandoned her stance on sanctuary policies. During a congressional hearing last year, she argued those measures serve as a necessary counterbalance to what she called federal overreach on immigration enforcement. So either she is doing the worst political makeover in history, or Trump is reading tea leaves that only he can see.
For her part, AOC keeps playing coy. She told one outlet her "main focus is really genuinely just the midterms right now." When Fox News Digital pressed her on whether she wanted the 2028 Democratic nomination, she dodged like a seasoned pro. "I have genuinely not really weighed seriously anything past the midterm elections," she said, adding that she is "taking in this information just like anybody else."
Sure, just like anybody else. Except most "anybody elses" are not sitting atop early presidential polls.
And that is the kicker. A fresh University of New Hampshire survey put AOC at the very top of the 2028 Democratic field in the Granite State. She grabbed 22 percent support among likely primary voters, edging out Pete Buttigieg by a single point and absolutely burying Kamala Harris by a whopping 17 points.
There is also the Chuck Schumer factor. When the Senate Minority Leader faces reelection in two years, AOC has reportedly weighed both a Senate challenge and a presidential campaign. She has also backed multiple socialist candidates who toppled incumbents and establishment favorites in Democratic primaries.
The woman keeps saying she is focused on the midterms. The polls say otherwise. And now Trump is publicly calling her shot before she even takes it. Whether she runs or not, one thing is certain. AOC is the Democrat everyone is watching, and the political world cannot stop talking about her next move.
