Nothing says "team unity" quite like the President of the United States hopping on Truth Social to publicly announce he disagrees "100%" with someone he personally put in charge. That's exactly what happened when Donald Trump torched Jeanine Pirro for dropping charges against a man accused of destroying the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, as USA Journal reported. Trump even added the chef's kiss of rhetorical devastation: "I don't know what she was thinking?" Brutal.

So here's the timeline of this absolute mess. Pirro's office indicted David Hearn, a 67 year old three time Olympian, back in July. The accusation? That he allegedly used his bare hands to rip apart the freshly installed sealant lining of the Reflecting Pool. At that point, Pirro's team was swinging hard, saying they had evidence proving he "willfully destroyed" federal property and behaved "forcefully and violently." A grand jury agreed and handed down an indictment. Hearn entered a not guilty plea.

Then on Friday, Pirro's office just casually tossed the whole case in the garbage. Their new explanation was that shoddy contractor work caused most of the damage, not criminal vandalism. Whoopsie! Turns out the pool liner was basically installed with the structural integrity of a wet paper towel, they now claim.

But here's where things get spicy. On Saturday, Trump released video footage showing the pool's lining being sliced open with what appears to be a knife or box cutter. Not tugged apart by frustrated fingers. Deliberately cut. With a blade. Last time anyone checked, defective installation doesn't typically involve someone showing up with sharp instruments to help things along.

And it gets better. Trump pointed to a 350 foot gash carved into the pool's bottom. He also referenced "86 47," which are apparently James Comey's favorite numbers, burned right into the grass near the monument. That's not exactly the calling card of an incompetent construction crew running behind schedule.

The logic problem with Pirro's reversal is almost too obvious. "The liner had pre existing issues" and "somebody took a blade to it on camera" are two facts that can absolutely coexist. A crummy installation job doesn't give anyone a free pass to commit vandalism at a national monument. That's like arguing you shouldn't get charged for smashing a car window because the car already had a dent.

A grand jury already reviewed evidence and decided there was enough for an indictment. Now the U.S. Attorney for D.C. is basically saying, "Never mind, our bad." That requires a significantly more convincing justification than blaming the contractor.

Pirro has reportedly left herself legal wiggle room to bring charges back if she wants to. And considering the boss just publicly roasted her on social media, one imagines that option is being seriously reconsidered right about now. When your own president says he has no idea what you were thinking, that's generally a sign to start thinking harder.
