President Trump has found himself a new sparring partner, and this time it is Janeese Lewis George, the Democratic candidate for mayor of Washington, D.C., who Trump has lovingly branded a "Communist" on Truth Social. Because nothing says Saturday morning like firing off a post about municipal governance.
As The American Tribune reported, Trump warned that he would "not let" George destroy the nation's capital with what he characterizes as far-left policies. His Truth Social post read, "Janeese Lewis George, the Communist who is almost certainly going to be elected Mayor of Washington, D.C., has stated that she wants to empty the prisons, make D.C. a Sanctuary City, oppose ICE, welcome Criminal Illegal Aliens back into our beloved Capital, resist Anti-Crime Crackdowns, Defund the Police, continue and expand Cashless Bail, and so many other Capital destroying 'things.'"
That is a lot of capital letters for a post about the capital. The president also noted that "many people, including myself, have worked long and hard" to make D.C. "a Safe and Prestigious Community" again, adding, "we will not let it be destroyed by a Communist adherent who has no intention to, MAKE WASHINGTON GREAT AGAIN!"
Trump even offered to sit down for a chat with George, which sounds like the world's most awkward coffee date.
George, to her credit, did not take the bait and spiral into a meltdown. She responded by saying, "While most of these claims are incorrect, the fact is that the Mayor of our nation's capital and the Administration are going to be meeting with each other." She added, "I'm willing to work with anyone, including the Administration, to improve the lives of DC residents, and I will stand up to anyone who puts our city or its residents in harm's way."
She did draw some lines, though, noting there are "limits to that cooperation" and stating, "We are not going to be able to stand up for our autonomy and fight for D.C. statehood ultimately, by just complying in advance." So basically, she is willing to play ball but not be a doormat. A nuanced position that will satisfy absolutely nobody on either side.
According to Breitbart News, the president's warning comes after his administration actually earned praise from some Democrats for construction and landscaping projects around the city, including restoring monuments, fountains at Meridian Hill Park, and the fountain at Columbus Circle outside Union Station. In August 2025, Breitbart also reported that video showed the city clearing a homeless encampment near the Kennedy Center after Trump vowed to crack down on crime.
One commenter on the story helpfully suggested Trump could invoke Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act to place the D.C. Metropolitan Police under direct federal control and activate the National Guard. Because nothing screams "small government conservative" like federalizing a city's police force over a mayoral election that has not even happened yet.
