Trump Confirms Plans To Meet Kim Jong Un Later This Year

Donald Trump just confirmed he's planning a face-to-face with North Korea's Kim Jong Un.

The president dropped the bombshell on Wednesday while giving reporters a look at a helipad being built on the White House South Lawn. When asked if he anticipated sitting down with the North Korean leader, Trump kept it simple: "Yeah, I will be." That's it. No hedging, no maybe, just a straight yes, as reported here.

Then Trump went full Trump, boasting about his personal connection with one of the most isolated rulers on the planet. "I know Kim Jong Un very well, and he's going to be fine as long as we have a smart president," he told the press. He also threw in a not-so-subtle dig at previous administrations, pointing out that Kim now possesses 57 nuclear warheads. "They should have never allowed it. If I were president, I wouldn't have allowed it. But he's got them."

This isn't coming out of nowhere either. On Monday, reporters asked Trump why Kim hadn't responded to his outreach attempts. His reply? "How do you know he hasn't responded?" When pushed for more details, he revealed that Kim had in fact gotten back to him and called the exchange "very positive." Trump has also bragged that "Kim Jong Un has always treated me with great respect" and claimed the two leaders have a mutual understanding.

But here's where things get really spicy. Just days before this revelation, Trump ordered a significant scaling back of joint military exercises between U.S. and South Korean forces. He took to Truth Social over the weekend, calling the drills expensive and "totally inappropriate and hostile" toward North Korea. He even instructed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to slash the scope of the operations.

The fallout was immediate. The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise, which kicked off on August 17 and was supposed to run through August 27, got chopped nearly in half. Pentagon officials confirmed the drills would wrap up on August 21, cutting the timeline from 11 days down to just five. Several live training components were either scrapped entirely or converted into computer simulations.

Oh, and Trump also casually mentioned that he asked South Korea's president to join U.S. efforts to denuclearize Iran. The response? "No thanks!" You can almost hear the eye roll through the screen.

Both American and South Korean officials are spinning all of this as momentum toward a diplomatic breakthrough with Pyongyang. And there is some precedent here. During his first go-round in the Oval Office, Trump held historic summits with Kim in Singapore in 2018 and Hanoi in 2019. He also made that jaw-dropping visit to the demilitarized zone in June 2019, becoming the first sitting American president to physically step onto North Korean soil.

So round two of the Trump and Kim show appears to be officially in the works. Whether it produces actual results or just another round of dramatic handshakes remains the billion-dollar question.
