Nonprofits in Los Angeles are still distributing free meth pipes and needles on Skid Row using taxpayer money.
Turning Point USA's Frontlines crew sent journalist Jonathan Choe into the heart of LA's most notorious homeless encampment, and the footage he brought back is absolutely wild. As reported here, Choe visited multiple locations and walked away carrying bags full of drug paraphernalia, including pipes for smoking methamphetamine, syringes, cookers, and other gear. No questions asked. No treatment offered. Just free supplies courtesy of your tax dollars.
Here's what makes this story absolutely explosive. This all went down just days after the Trump administration publicly declared that so-called harm reduction strategies were finished as federal policy. HUD Secretary Scott Turner and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. held a press conference in Los Angeles where they torched the city's approach to homelessness. Turner literally held up a brown bag stuffed with drug paraphernalia that he said was being given to addicts on the streets with government funding.
Turner has been making the case for months that pouring money into programs like these does nothing to actually get people off drugs or off the streets. His argument is simple. Handing someone a meth pipe is not compassion. It is enabling. He wants federal dollars redirected toward treatment, recovery, and helping people become self-sufficient again.
And the administration is putting its money where its mouth is. Back in June, HUD pulled the plug on the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority as the lead agency overseeing the region's homelessness response. The reason? Alleged financial mismanagement and a lack of proper safeguards. Keep in mind, LAHSA's umbrella organization received close to $1 billion in federal funding over five years. That is a staggering amount of cash with apparently very little accountability.
HUD also rolled out a $4.04 billion funding opportunity in June that prioritizes recovery and self-sufficiency over the old model of simply providing housing without addressing the root causes of addiction and mental illness.
LA County officials, for their part, have defended these programs as legitimate public health tools. County documents describe syringe exchanges and naloxone distribution as strategies meant to prevent overdose deaths and stop the spread of disease. A 2026 county resource guide actually lists several Skid Row organizations providing exactly these kinds of services.
But Choe painted a very different picture on the ground. He told viewers that workers at these facilities hand out drug supplies without hesitation, but almost never bother to ask the person receiving them whether they actually want help getting clean.
That disconnect is the real scandal here. Billions flowing into a system that seems more interested in managing addiction than ending it. The Trump administration is clearly ready for a fight over this, and LA is ground zero.
