Senate Majority Leader John Thune just pulled off one of the most embarrassing political pivots we have seen in a long time. Instead of actually passing the SAVE America Act, he wants to turn it into a campaign slogan. You literally cannot make this stuff up. As USA Journal reported, Thune told reporters on Monday that Republicans should redirect their frustrations toward Democrats and ride this thing into the midterms.
Here is the kicker. The man has 53 Republican senators at his disposal and somehow cannot wrangle 50 of them to vote yes. His big flex to reporters? Bragging that he is the only person who "can count to 50." Well, Senator, if counting is your superpower, maybe try counting the arms you should be twisting behind closed doors.
Let us talk about why this bill actually matters, because the numbers are absolutely wild. A staggering 83 percent of all Americans support requiring proof of citizenship to register and vote. Even 72 percent of Democrats back it. New Jersey recently confirmed that 6,600 noncitizens were sitting on its voter rolls, and nearly 400 of them actually cast ballots. Virginia discovered another 6,531 noncitizens registered. Over in Texas, a British national just pleaded guilty to casting votes in five separate American elections spanning twelve years. The Trump administration declassified intelligence showing 270,000 noncitizen registrations across just four cooperating states.
This is not some theoretical problem anymore. It is documented, prosecuted, and growing by the week. And Thune's grand solution is to slap it on a bumper sticker for 2026.
Meanwhile, Democrats have already put it in writing that they will torch the filibuster the second they reclaim power. Senator Chris Murphy confirmed this publicly on a podcast. So the procedural guardrail Thune is clinging to like a life raft has an expiration date stamped right on it.
Here is perhaps the most humiliating detail of all. Senator Darline Graham, who replaced her late brother Lindsey just eight days ago, immediately announced she would vote to end the filibuster if that is what passing the SAVE America Act requires. Eight days on the job and she already reads the room better than the guy who has been running the chamber for eight months.
President Trump himself traveled to Capitol Hill to personally pressure Republicans into getting this legislation across the finish line. Even with presidential arm-twisting, Thune still came up empty.
Running on "we tried but failed" is not exactly a rallying cry that gets voters fired up. It is the kind of message that keeps your base parked on the couch in November. Telling 83 percent of America you agree with them but just could not get it done is political malpractice of the highest order.
Thune is essentially gift wrapping a devastating attack ad for his opponents. Instead of delivering results with a clear majority, he is asking voters to trust that next time will be different. Good luck with that sales pitch, Senator.
