Well, this is disturbing. What happened to New York? I thought this was America?
This is the annual Ashura Juloos (procession), a major, permitted religious event held by Shia Muslims to observe the Day of Ashura. The procession took place in Manhattan along Park Avenue.
Thousands of participants gathered, dressed largely in black, to commemorate the martyrdom of Hussein ibn Ali. The procession included traditional cultural displays, such as symbolic red-stained horses and men participating in matam (ritual chest-beating).
While the procession was legally permitted and organized by the Jafria Association of North America with a heavy police presence to facilitate the march, the large-scale disruption to Midtown Manhattan traffic and the visibility of the religious rituals sparked intense polarized debate on social media, with most people wanting this out of the city.
Can't they do this in a park or somewhere that's not disrupting everyone else who couldn't care less?
