A 17 year old who was already well known to local cops for a string of burglaries and car thefts has been charged with the murders of an elderly Mississippi couple who literally hired him to help around their house. You know, because they were trying to be good people. As reported by The American Tribune, Bill Blair, 74, and his wife Carol were found dead in their Mendenhall, Mississippi home on June 3, 2026, after Cordarius Hobbs allegedly broke in and shot them both.
Mendenhall, by the way, is a town of roughly 2,200 people, the kind of place where everyone knows everyone. And apparently, everyone also knew Hobbs. The Simpson County Sheriff's Department incident report, obtained by Fox News, reveals that officers immediately suspected a "troubled juvenile known to us as Cordarius Hobbs" who was also suspected in numerous home burglaries and auto thefts in the area. So this kid had quite the resume already.
During a preliminary hearing in July, family members confirmed that Hobbs had been doing house cleaning and various chores for the Blairs. His grandfather, Billy Newsome, told police that Cordarius was actually called over to work for the couple on the very day of the alleged shooting. Newsome insists his grandson is innocent, asking why anyone would rob somebody they work for and then stick around while police show up. He says the whole thing "just ain't adding up."
Here is what did happen that day. Three contractors showed up to install a generator and found a vehicle parked with its door open and multiple firearms sitting on the seats. When nobody emerged from the residence, they called the sheriff for a welfare check. Officers who responded were met with gunfire, which kicked off a two hour standoff. Hobbs was eventually apprehended while trying to flee the home, and he was unarmed when caught.
Carol Blair was discovered in a bedroom in the fetal position. She had been shot three times in the back of her head. Bill Blair was found on the kitchen floor with three gunshot wounds to his face. These were people described by their friend Jason Busby as "selfless," the kind of folks who would give you the shirt off their backs.
Prosecutors are not messing around with this one. Hobbs has been charged as an adult with two counts of capital murder, one count of burglary, four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, four counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement officers, and two counts of aggravated assault against a person over 65. That is a lot of counts for a teenager.
His defense attorney, Zachary Vaughn, told Fox News that his client has been respectful and courteous during their meetings, and argued that direct forensic evidence linking Hobbs to the murders is lacking. Hobbs is currently sitting in Rankin County jail after his request for bond was denied. So at least for now, he is not going anywhere.
