The network's chief data analyst could barely contain himself as Wisconsin's Democratic gubernatorial primary delivered one jaw dropping twist after another, according to reports. At one point, the man looked like he was ready to rip off his mic and walk into the night, never to return.
Here's the backstory that had Kornacki spiraling. David Crowley, the Milwaukee County Executive, pulled off a stunning upset over democratic socialist State Rep. Francesca Hong in one of the tightest gubernatorial primaries you'll ever see. With 93 percent of ballots tallied and Crowley clinging to a roughly 3,200 vote advantage, Kornacki physically slouched over, put both hands on his knees, and needed a moment to gather himself. His mouth hung wide open. "Really? Really?" he whispered, barely audible.
Then came the knockout blow. Milwaukee County officials dropped a bombshell that five corrupted flash drives were causing delays in vote reporting. Kornacki laughed in frustration, buried his face in his left palm, and stammered on camera. "Are you serious?!" he blurted out before trailing off into a string of half sentences, staring down at his signature New Balance kicks.
Another clip showing him telling viewers that Wisconsin officials needed to "get their act together" blew up across social media. He reluctantly signed off without final results, apologizing to the faithful audience who stuck around for hours.
The final numbers tell an incredible story. Crowley grabbed 39.8 percent with 313,321 votes while Hong captured 39.4 percent at 310,109. State Sen. Kelda Roys landed third with 7.5 percent, Joel Brennan took 4.7 percent, and Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, who had already suspended her campaign, still pulled 4.1 percent.
The wild part? Crowley had actually suspended his own campaign back in early July because support was lagging. He endorsed Rodriguez, but when she dropped out amid a campaign finance scandal, he jumped right back in with a major boost from outgoing Gov. Tony Evers. That endorsement and a late fundraising surge helped him consolidate establishment backing.
Meanwhile, Hong had been leading polls by double digits, sometimes by 20 to 30 points. She made history as the first Asian American elected to Wisconsin's Legislature and energized progressive voters with platforms centered on workers' rights and housing. But moderate Democrats apparently prioritized electability in this crucial swing state.
Crowley, 40, who overcame childhood homelessness, could become Wisconsin's first Black governor. He'll square off against Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, a Trump backed congressman, in November's general election.
Early Wednesday, Kornacki thanked his loyal viewers on X for riding out the chaos alongside him. "I hope you got at least a little sleep!" he wrote. Same, Steve. Same.
