Stephen A. Smith, the famously opinionated sports broadcaster, openly admitted that Florida congressman Byron Donalds might be the one person capable of converting him into a Republican, according to reports. Let that sink in for a moment. The guy who has long identified as a registered independent with socially liberal leanings is now publicly swooning over a Trump ally running for governor of Florida.
On his "Straight Shooter" podcast, Smith laid it on thick. He called Donalds "the real deal" and said he communicates with the congressman regularly. Smith noted that he has watched Donalds go toe to toe with Democrats on various programs and come out looking sharp every single time. "He ain't backing up. He knows his stuff," Smith declared, adding that he has zero negative things to say about the man.
This isn't some casual offhand remark either. Smith also took a blowtorch to the Democratic Party during the same episode. He admitted he has "lost interest" in Democrats "in a lot of different ways" and said he refuses to apologize for questioning what they have actually delivered. That is a seismic statement from someone with Smith's massive platform and cultural influence.
The conversation covered serious policy ground too. Donalds discussed affordability, property taxes, outreach to Black voters, and other campaign priorities as he seeks the Republican nomination to replace term-limited Governor Ron DeSantis. When Smith challenged him on whether his close ties to President Donald Trump might generate skepticism among Black voters, Donalds pushed back, arguing that voters from every political background should focus on verifiable policy results rather than empty promises.
And Donalds has every reason to feel confident right now. A Quantus Insights survey from July 31 showed him crushing the Republican primary field with 49.6 percent support among likely voters. Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins trailed far behind at just 15.7 percent. On top of that dominance, the Donalds campaign has hauled in over $90 million throughout this cycle. The August 18 primary is shaping up to be a coronation, not a contest.
Donalds returned the love during a separate interview with Just The News the following day. He called Smith "a good guy" and said their growing friendship over the past year means a great deal to him. He then pivoted to a broader message, saying that Republicans, independents, and even Democrats all want the same basic things: common sense governance, safe neighborhoods, a secure border, and economic opportunity.
The political landscape keeps shifting in wild and unexpected directions. When Stephen A.
