Sophie Cunningham Sings Toby Keith On Top Of A Bar After Fever Win

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham climbed on top of a bar and grabbed a microphone Friday night.

The 6-foot-1 WNBA star had just helped her squad knock off the Dallas Wings, and she was clearly feeling herself. What started as a casual postgame beverage with friends at Clayton's Country Bar in Indianapolis turned into an absolute spectacle when the bar's owner spotted her in the crowd, according to reports.

Clayton Anderson, a country singer who owns the joint, was rocking a red Fever shirt and carrying a mic when he noticed Cunningham hanging out near the end of the bar. He walked right up and invited her to hop on for a song. Cunningham didn't need much convincing. She hopped onto the bar railing next to Anderson as the entire place lost its mind.

"Ladies and gentlemen, my friend, America's sweetheart, Sophie Cunningham!" Anderson shouted to a roaring crowd. Then they launched into Toby Keith's iconic patriotic anthem "Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue" while patrons throughout the venue belted along. Video of the whole thing blew up on social media almost immediately.

Here's the thing though. This fun little karaoke moment came after an absolutely wild stretch for Cunningham off the court.

Just weeks earlier, she made national headlines when she told ESPN that she's against biological males competing in women's sports. She caught serious heat from critics, but she stood her ground. "I never once said" she hates trans people, Cunningham pushed back. She framed her stance as protecting young girls in locker rooms and in competition, adding that love and truth can coexist.

The drama didn't stop there. An opposing coach showed up wearing a "Trans Kids Belong" shirt in what appeared to be a direct response. Then things got physical on the court when Chicago Sky's DiJonai Carrington smacked Cunningham right in the face during a nationally broadcast game. Cunningham hit the floor hard but somehow still converted the layup, because of course she did. She popped back up with blood visible around her mouth and got right in Carrington's face demanding to know why she got hit.

Officials tossed Carrington with a Flagrant Two foul. Cunningham gave her a sarcastic round of applause as she walked off. The beef then migrated to social media where Carrington posted "WHITE PRIVILEGE" in all caps on Threads and tagged the Fever's account. OutKick founder Clay Travis ripped Carrington's behavior, calling the post "blatant racism" and saying she deserved a season long suspension.

Cunningham seemed completely unbothered by all of it. She posed for a photo with women's sports advocate and former collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines after the incident.

And then on Friday night, rather than relitigating any of the political firestorms swirling around her, she simply grabbed a mic and sang country music on top of a bar while an entire crowd went wild. For one glorious evening in Indianapolis, the only controversy surrounding Sophie Cunningham was whether she can carry a tune.
