Delaware Senator Chris Coons sustained injuries on Sunday after a pickup truck driver suffered a medical episode and plowed into multiple vehicles, including the one carrying the Democratic lawmaker.
As first reported by The American Tribune, the incident unfolded around 10:20 a.m. on June 28 along Savannah Road in Lewes, Delaware. Coons was riding in the front passenger seat of a vehicle driven by a staffer when a nearby pickup truck driver lost consciousness, triggering a chain reaction collision involving several cars.
The senator was transported to Beebe Hospital, where medical staff treated him for what his office described as minor injuries. He was released the same day and is now recovering at home, with a full and swift recovery expected.
Coons expressed his gratitude in a statement released by his office, thanking the Lewes Police Department, the Lewes and Rehoboth Fire Departments, Sussex County Emergency Medical Services, and the medical team at Beebe Hospital. He also noted his relief that no one involved in the crash appeared to have been seriously injured.
The senator echoed those sentiments on his X account, writing that he felt "relieved and blessed" given the outcome. He specifically praised the first responders for their quick and professional arrival at the scene.
Lewes Police Chief Thomas Spell confirmed the details of the crash in comments to People magazine, stating that the pickup truck driver likely lost consciousness due to a medical issue. Spell also made a point of noting there were no signs of impairment on the part of the truck driver, effectively shutting down speculation from some social media commenters who had quickly jumped to conclusions about possible impaired driving.
The crash serves as a reminder of how quickly things can go sideways on the road when a driver suffers a sudden medical emergency. Fortunately, all parties involved appear to have escaped without life threatening injuries.
