Marco Rubio's State Department just dropped a bombshell that has the immigration world buzzing. Since Donald Trump kicked off his second term back in January 2025, a staggering 175,000 visas have been yanked, and officials say they are far from finished.
The vast majority of those revocations came because visa holders ran afoul of American criminal law, according to Conservative Brief. We are talking assault charges, drunk driving busts, theft, and narcotics offenses topping the list. But wait, it gets worse. A considerable chunk also involved sexual assault allegations, child abuse cases, fraud schemes, reckless driving incidents, and embezzlement.
The feds also flagged revocations connected to suspected birth tourism operations and various violations of immigration statutes. Roughly 100,000 of those cancellations happened throughout 2025, with another 75,000 already processed so far this year. If that pace holds steady, officials estimate approximately 125,000 additional visas will be torched by December 2026.
But the visa crackdown is only half the story here.
Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy grabbed attention on Monday by breaking down some eye-popping numbers related to birthright citizenship. Speaking on Fox & Friends, Doocy noted that around 260,000 babies receive automatic U.S. citizenship annually despite having parents who are neither citizens nor lawful permanent residents. Birth tourism alone accounts for somewhere between 20,000 and 26,000 of those cases every single year.
This all ties back to the Supreme Court's blockbuster late June ruling, where the justices voted 6 to 3 against Trump's executive order challenging birthright citizenship protections under the Fourteenth Amendment. The court declared that children born on American soil qualify as citizens regardless of their parents' immigration status. Justices Thomas, Alito, and Gorsuch were the three dissenters.
Trump had signed that executive order on his very first day back in the Oval Office, January 20, 2025, arguing the Fourteenth Amendment was originally crafted to grant citizenship to formerly enslaved Americans after the Civil War.
Now here is where things get really interesting. Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who partially sided with the majority, essentially handed Republicans a legislative roadmap. He wrote that Congress could absolutely create exceptions to birthright citizenship without violating the Constitution. The catch? Lawmakers simply have not passed such legislation yet.
Enter Indiana Senator Jim Banks, who is now charging forward with his so called Citizenship Act. The bill would officially classify illegal border crossings as a foreign invasion and lean on Article I of the Constitution, which grants Congress authority over naturalization rules. If passed, the legislation would eliminate automatic citizenship for babies born to undocumented parents on U.S. soil.
So while Rubio's team keeps shredding visas at a furious clip, Congressional Republicans are quietly building the framework to fundamentally reshape who gets to call themselves an American citizen. Buckle up, because this fight is only getting started.
