Marco Rubio just pulled the plug on more than 600 visas tied to organized birth tourism schemes.
The Secretary of State dropped the hammer Wednesday, revealing that a brand new Birth Tourism Prevention Task Force has been busy in its very first month going after foreign nationals across the globe. Rubio took to X with a bold declaration that "American citizenship is not for sale," according to reports. The Trump administration is zeroing in on sophisticated networks that shuttle pregnant women into the country for the sole purpose of snagging automatic citizenship for their newborns.
And we're not talking about casual travelers here. Rubio described full blown criminal rings that coach clients on how to lie their way through the visa process, set up housing arrangements, and even cook up forged documents. All of it designed to turn U.S. citizenship into a product on the open market.
Here's the thing though. This crackdown doesn't touch the 14th Amendment or birthright citizenship itself. The focus is squarely on fraud, visa deception, and the commercial operators running these operations like a business. Since 2020, consular officers have already been instructed to reject visitor visas when the obvious goal is delivering a baby for citizenship. The new task force takes that further with retroactive reviews, revoking existing visas, and teaming up with Homeland Security.
Rubio's own story gives this move some extra punch. He was born in 1971 to Cuban immigrants who later became naturalized citizens. He's been recognized as a natural born citizen under the Constitution. Now he's going after people trying to game that very same system for profit.
Policy experts say the situation is genuinely complicated. Migration Policy Institute analyst Colleen Putzel-Kavanaugh pointed out that while giving birth on American soil isn't illegal by itself, traveling here specifically for that purpose and the fraud that companies use to make it happen absolutely are crimes.
Jeremy Beck, co-president of NumbersUSA, praised the enforcement push and compared birth tourism to asylum shopping. He noted that the U.S. and Canada stand alone among developed nations in granting automatic citizenship to children born to tourists. Beck also raised concerns about a recent Supreme Court ruling that affirmed birthright citizenship for children of those unlawfully or temporarily present, saying it means anyone who successfully deceives an immigration officer gets rewarded with a citizen child.
Beck called on Congress to step up with legislation, pointing to bills from Senator Marsha Blackburn and Representative Rich McCormick that would explicitly bar tourists from entry if their intent is giving birth for citizenship purposes. He noted that the Obama, Trump, and Biden administrations all took various approaches, but congressional action is needed to lock the rules in place.
The State Department hasn't named which countries or organizations got caught up in the dragnet. Rubio made clear this is only the beginning, vowing to deploy every tool available to tear apart these networks and protect the integrity of American citizenship.
