Aaron Rodgers was asked a simple question about his mindset heading into what he says will probably be his last NFL season. Instead, he delivered a two minute verbal demolition of Dr. Anthony Fauci that left everyone on The Pat McAfee Show scrambling. As Trending Politics reported, the four time MVP appeared live from Steelers training camp on Monday and chose absolute violence. The verbal kind.
When McAfee asked how the quarterback's outlook had evolved for his "last rodeo," Rodgers bypassed the sentimental stuff entirely and went straight for Fauci, who recently pleaded the Fifth Amendment over 100 times during a Senate hearing about the government's COVID-19 response. Rodgers opened with, "I'm gonna plead the fifth, like that absolute coward Tony Fauci."
Now look, when most athletes are asked about their final season, they get misty eyed and talk about gratitude. Rodgers apparently had other plans. He zeroed in on the fact that Fauci received a presidential pardon yet still refused to answer questions from lawmakers. "Are you kidding me? You got a pardon and you pleaded over 100 times at the White House? What are you scared of, Tony?" Rodgers fired off. He also reminded everyone that Fauci once proclaimed himself to BE science, yet somehow couldn't respond to a single question under oath.
Then the quarterback pivoted to his own experience being scrutinized over his vaccination status, pointing out that television networks devoted enormous amounts of airtime to covering him every single week while barely touching the Fauci hearing. He also threw in a mention of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding getting more coverage than Fauci's testimony, which is honestly a fair observation about our collective priorities as a society.
Rodgers also brought up what he described as another scandal this offseason involving someone who votes for MVP and coach of the year, then turned directly to ESPN and asked how much time their network spent covering that. McAfee's response of "Whoa, our network?" was the sound of a man realizing he was standing in a blast zone.
The quarterback wasn't finished, though. He brought up Fauci's recently published diary, mocking the former health official for apparently spending his time writing about how enjoyable fame was. Rodgers also declared that COVID originating from a lab in China is no longer even debatable, and called Fauci "an absolute criminal."
He also addressed years of media coverage about his personal relationships by stating he's currently on good terms with his family, essentially daring reporters to find something new to write about.
McAfee eventually wrapped things up by calling the previous few seasons a "fun ride." Rodgers responded graciously, saying it had been a great life and a great career. You know, the answer he probably should have given to the original question before he decided to turn a training camp interview into a congressional hearing of his own.
