Iowa's Democratic gubernatorial candidate locked himself in a bathroom for 15 minutes at the state fair.
Rob Sand, the current state auditor and the only Democrat holding statewide office in Iowa, had a Thursday he probably wants to forget. The governor hopeful was confronted by voters and activists connected to Turning Point Action at the Iowa State Fair, and instead of standing his ground, he reportedly bolted into a restroom and stayed behind a locked stall door while people waited outside.
Fifteen whole minutes. That is how long Sand sat in that bathroom while fairgoers and TPUSA-affiliated activists cooled their heels on the other side of the door. When he finally came out, the reception was even worse. Louder boos. More pointed questions about his record and his past. And what did Sand do? He walked straight toward the nearest exit and left the fairgrounds entirely.
No answers. No engagement. No effort to connect with the very people he is asking to vote for him.
Activists and social media users who were part of the confrontation pushed back on any suggestion that Sand was being harassed. They said regular voters were simply demanding accountability from a man who wants to run their state. One prominent social media personality, Ella Mullenbach, posted a video of the incident and declared that Iowa does not want what she called a "socialist" or a "liar" for governor.
Now, before anyone counts Sand completely out, there is some context worth knowing. The 2026 governor's race is actually competitive. Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds chose not to seek another term, leaving an open seat for the first time in years. GOP businessman Zach Lahn is the Republican nominee standing between Sand and the governor's mansion.
Democrats see this as their strongest shot in quite some time, even though the state has been trending deep red. Donald Trump won Iowa by 13 points in 2024, and Reynolds blew out her opponent by 18 points when she ran for reelection in 2022.
Sand has defied the odds before, though. He squeaked out a reelection victory as auditor in 2022 by fewer than 3,000 votes, surviving in a brutal political environment for his party. That razor-thin win is a big part of his pitch to voters. He sells himself as the rare Democrat who can pull in independents and even peel off some Republican support.
But hiding in a bathroom stall at the biggest public event in your state is not exactly the look of someone ready to lead. Critics say the whole spectacle showed a candidate unwilling to face uncomfortable questions from the people he claims to represent. If Sand wants to flip Iowa blue, he is going to need thicker skin than what he showed on Thursday.
The bathroom stall strategy is a bold one. Let us see if it pays off for him.
