Ohio Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, who is 80 years old, ended up in the hospital on Sunday after a stolen vehicle slammed into the car she was riding in while she was headed to church. Because apparently even going to Sunday services isn't safe anymore. As Trending Politics reported, the longtime Democratic representative was a passenger when the collision occurred in Toledo, Ohio, and the person who caused it decided that fleeing was the best option.
Her congressional office released a statement confirming that Kaptur was conscious, alert, and being treated for injuries that were not life threatening. Two people total were taken to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center, and thankfully neither had serious conditions. So at least there's some good news buried in this mess.
Now here's where the story gets really spicy. Toledo police confirmed the sedan that caused the wreck was stolen. A witness named Morgan Valley said she dialed 911 after hearing the impact, then watched as a man bolted from one of the vehicles on foot. She gave his description to officers, which is helpful since the guy clearly had no intention of sticking around. Another witness reported seeing the fleeing driver get scooped up by a completely separate getaway vehicle. So this wasn't just a hit and run, it was a hit and run with a planned escape route. Very organized crime energy for a Sunday morning.
The scene looked like something out of an action movie. A black Ford Bronco was sitting on the sidewalk with its airbags deployed and a tire completely flattened. Meanwhile, a silver sedan with its front end crushed was pointed the wrong direction in the middle of Detroit Avenue. Just a totally normal day in Toledo.
Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz confirmed that as of Sunday afternoon, the person responsible was still on the loose but reassured everyone by saying that "everyone seems to be fine." Bold and optimistic words from the mayor while the suspect is literally still out there somewhere.
Kaptur's office didn't specify which of the wrecked vehicles she had been traveling in or identify who was driving her car. What we do know is that she expressed gratitude to the Toledo Police and Fire Departments for showing up quickly, as well as the medical staff treating those involved. She also thanked the hundreds of constituents who reached out and said she plans to get back to her full schedule soon.
For those unfamiliar with Kaptur, she has been serving in the U.S. House continuously since 1983, making her the longest serving woman in the entire history of that chamber. Her district covers Toledo and the surrounding northwest Ohio region. After more than four decades in Congress, getting taken out by a stolen car on the way to worship was probably not on her bingo card for the weekend.
