In what can only be described as a spectacular own goal, Senator Rand Paul's office dumped roughly 1,600 pages of Dr. Anthony Fauci's personal diaries online and apparently forgot that redacting sensitive medical information is, you know, important. As Conservative Brief reported, the records contained names, diagnoses, symptoms, and test results for over 20 people, covering conditions like cancer, Ebola, and HIV. Nothing says "congressional oversight" quite like accidentally blasting someone's private health history across the internet.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reportedly had his team spend months digging through multiple government servers at the Department of Health and Human Services to locate the material before handing it over to Paul and Senator Ron Johnson for their investigations. The pages covered pandemic entries from late 2019 through 2022 plus earlier career notes from Fauci's long tenure running the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
One woman named Leslie Adelman, whose Von Hippel-Lindau disease and surgery details appeared in an October 2020 entry, called the whole thing "unconstitutional and truly disappointing." She told reporters she was "pretty offended" that her name and medical records were now public reading material. Other affected individuals, including an Ebola survivor and family members of former Trump administration officials, raised similar privacy concerns. Some children's information was among the details eventually blacked out. Paul's team did pull and partially update the files after the initial release, though not every piece of sensitive data got the redaction treatment. Privacy advocates questioned whether dumping people's health records served any legitimate oversight purpose.
Now, the actual diary content is where things get politically spicy. Early 2020 entries apparently show scientists on a key conference call leaning toward the possibility of deliberate genetic insertion in the virus causing COVID-19, with Fauci noting there was limited agreement that the origin was purely natural. Paul has repeatedly pointed to those passages as proof that Fauci played down lab leak concerns while publicly insisting the science said otherwise. Other entries capture Fauci reflecting on his growing media celebrity and tensions inside the White House.
At a nearly three hour hearing last week, the 85 year old retired official invoked his Fifth Amendment right more than 100 times, refusing to answer questions about COVID origins, gain of function research, and even basic procedural matters. In his opening statement, Fauci accused Paul of an "unhinged obsession" aimed at putting him "behind bars" and claimed the unredacted diary release was designed to embarrass and intimidate him. He noted cooperating with Congress over 200 times across decades but said current circumstances made answering impossible.
Paul fired back that a prior presidential pardon eliminated criminal jeopardy for the relevant time period and that making an opening statement waived Fifth Amendment protection. He warned of consequences for obstructing the investigation and scheduled a committee vote on a contempt resolution expected this week. Fauci's lawyers dismissed the whole pursuit as a "pathological" vendetta. Democrats on the panel defended Fauci and criticized the hearing as political theater.
