There's a phrase that gets thrown around a lot in politics, and for once, someone used it with pinpoint accuracy. Spencer Pratt, of all people, hopped on X to call NYU professor Scott Galloway a "useful idiot," and honestly, the man earned that title like it was a doctoral degree.
So here's what happened, as USA Journal reported. Galloway is a left-leaning podcaster and business professor at NYU who enthusiastically supported Zohran Mamdani's campaign for New York City mayor. He was all aboard the progressive tax train. He loved the class warfare talking points. Making rich folks cough up their fair share? Sign him up! Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt.
Then Mamdani went ahead and dropped a searchable database containing the names and home addresses of 950,000 property owners in New York City as part of his pied-a-terre tax proposal. Guess whose personal information was sitting right there in the database? If you guessed Scott Galloway, congratulations, you understand how irony works.
Galloway popped up on Fox News looking like a guy who just realized the leopard he voted for was now sizing up his face. He said Mamdani took a legitimate revenue source and turned it into a "wanted poster." He even pointed out that publishing such a list roughly 18 months after a healthcare CEO was fatally shot on a Manhattan street seems, shall we say, not great. That CEO was Brian Thompson of United HealthCare, who was allegedly murdered by Luigi Mangione outside a hotel last December. Parts of the political left practically threw a parade when it happened.
So in that climate, with class warfare rhetoric already translating into real world violence, Mamdani thought it would be a swell idea to publish a giant list identifying nearly a million New Yorkers he's spent his career painting as parasites. Cool, cool, totally normal governance stuff.
Writer Stephen L. Miller nailed the whole situation when he quipped that "you weren't supposed to put my name on a wealthy doxxing hit list" is basically just the updated version of "why are you throwing me against the wall?"
But here's the part that really tells you everything. Galloway's big takeaway wasn't that demonizing wealthy people is morally wrong or potentially dangerous. Nope. His concern was that Mamdani is "making it harder for all progressives." His complaint was about optics. Not ethics, not safety, just branding. The guy got personally doxxed by his own candidate and his first instinct was to worry about the progressive movement's PR strategy.
That, friends, is the "useful idiot" operating at peak performance. Not upset about what's happening, just bummed about how it looks while it's happening.
The database remains online. Galloway's address is still sitting there for anyone to find. Turns out the revolution doesn't offer a loyalty discount, and it definitely does not care about your podcast.
