Nancy Pelosi, the retiring former House Speaker, would like everyone to know that she is absolutely, positively not here for the socialist kids primarying her beloved Democratic incumbents. As Conservative Brief reported, Pelosi delivered this message at the Cascade PBS Ideas Festival earlier this month, and it had real "I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed" energy.
Pelosi made it crystal clear that while she's liberal on basically every domestic policy imaginable, she draws the line at Democratic Socialists of America candidates waltzing in and beating sitting Democrats in primaries. Her argument boils down to: we're trying to win back the House, people, and you're over here spending money fighting each other like it's a family Thanksgiving dinner.
"You want to do that? Do that," she said, in what might be the most passive aggressive permission slip ever issued in American politics. But then she added the kicker: "don't think that that's something that is good for this year." Translation: sure, knock yourselves out, just maybe wait until we actually have power again before you start eating our own.
She went on to frame the whole situation as a constitutional crisis, saying the party needs to stay "completely focused on saving the Constitution" under President Donald Trump and the GOP majority. Because nothing says "saving democracy" quite like telling people not to run in democratic elections.
But here's where things get spicy for Pelosi's brand of politics. A fresh CNN poll conducted by SSRS found that roughly one third of Democrats and Democratic leaning adults now identify as democratic socialists. That's not exactly a fringe movement anymore. That's more like a hostile takeover in progress.
And the scoreboard isn't looking great for Team Pelosi either. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani beat Andrew Cuomo last year. Democratic socialist candidates recently knocked off incumbent Reps. Adriano Espaillat in New York and Diana DeGette in Colorado. Over in Wisconsin, democratic socialist Francesca Hong is leading the field in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. So the "insurgency" Pelosi is scolding seems to be doing just fine without her blessing.
The CNN survey also painted an interesting picture of who these socialist leaning Democrats actually are. They skew younger, with 59% under 45. They're more likely to be White at 57%. They're less likely to hold college degrees at 66% without one, and 76% earn under $100,000 annually. Perhaps most importantly for election purposes, 66% of registered democratic socialist voters say they're extremely motivated to cast ballots this year, compared to 57% of other Democratic leaning adults.
These voters are also nearly twice as likely as other Democrats to want their party shifting further leftward on policy. They favor leadership changes and younger candidates, which is basically the political equivalent of telling grandma her casserole recipe needs updating.
So Pelosi can scold all she wants, but the numbers suggest her wing of the party might be the one facing an existential crisis. The democratic socialists aren't just knocking on the door anymore. They're rearranging the furniture.
