The final tally? She won by exactly three votes. That's the same razor-thin margin Deery originally thought HE had before the recount shook everything up. A total swing of six votes on one single recount decided the whole thing.
So why did Deery land in Trump's crosshairs in the first place? Simple. He was part of a group of Indiana state senators who stood in the way of Trump's effort to redraw the state's congressional map before the midterms. The president wanted favorable district lines in a solidly red state to give Republicans every structural edge possible heading into November. Deery and his allies blocked that plan, not over some grand constitutional principle, but reportedly to shield incumbent colleagues who would have lost their seats under a redrawn map.
Trump took notice. He backed a challenger. That challenger just won by the thinnest margin you can imagine.
Now here's where the story gets truly delicious. Deery is refusing to concede. He accused Indiana's Recount Commission of attempting to "undermine the will of voters" and treating ballots differently depending on whether they helped the president's political agenda.
