Paul Pelosi, the 86-year-old husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is once again making headlines in Napa County, and once again it involves a car. This time, as Trending Politics reported, the Napa County Sheriff's Office is recommending a misdemeanor charge against Pelosi for fleeing the scene of an accident after his convertible smacked into a parked car in Yountville, California on July 3.
Here is the sequence of events, which honestly reads like a Mr. Magoo cartoon. A witness saw a brown convertible traveling northbound on Yount Street slam into the rear of a legally parked, unoccupied vehicle. The driver briefly stopped, apparently surveyed the carnage of scattered pieces, scratch marks, a large dent, and a tear on the parked car, and then just drove away. Deputies later found the brown convertible partially blocking Yountville Cross Road with significant front right damage because, and this is the best part, the car had become so wrecked from the collision that it simply stopped working.
Pelosi told investigators he "hit something but did not know what it was," so he kept driving until his vehicle gave up on life. Now look, we have all hit something and wondered what it was. A pothole, maybe a raccoon, possibly a curb after a long day. But when there are car parts scattered on the ground behind you and your own vehicle is caving in on one side, most people start to put two and two together.
To his credit, a preliminary alcohol screening came back at .00, so at least that was not a factor this time around. Officials confirmed that impairment from drugs or alcohol was ruled out. Pelosi was not arrested at the scene, which the Sheriff's Office says is standard procedure for misdemeanor cases without injuries.
The case is being referred to the Napa County District Attorney's Office for review. As of Sunday, the DA's office confirmed it was aware of the incident but had not yet received a formal referral. Additionally, a California DMV re-evaluation referral form is being submitted because Pelosi is classified as an elderly driver. Officials described this as a common step for drivers in that age group.
A Pelosi family spokesman issued a statement saying, "Mr. Paul Pelosi has personally apologized to the owner of the vehicle and assured them that he would take responsibility for the damage to their vehicle. Speaker Pelosi will not be commenting further on this private matter."
For those keeping score at home, this is not Paul Pelosi's first rodeo in Napa County. Back in 2022, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DUI charges, earning himself five days in jail (he served two with credit), three years of probation, a drinking driver class, an ignition interlock device, roughly $5,000 in victim restitution, and nearly $2,000 in fines.
At this point, someone in the Pelosi household might want to consider a driver. Just a thought.
