PA Supreme Court Justice Quits Democratic Party Over Antisemitism

Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice David Wecht has decided he is done being a Democrat, and he is not being subtle about why. In a statement distributed through the state court system, Wecht announced he is leaving the party that elected him, citing what he describes as a growing tolerance for antisemitism within Democratic ranks. As The American Tribune reported, the justice wrote that antisemitic "hatred has grown on the left" and has "moved from the fringe to the mainstream."

Nothing says "I am fed up" quite like a guy who served as vice-chair of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, won multiple judicial seats as a Democrat, and just secured another decade-long term as a Democrat in 2025 turning around and saying, "Yeah, I am out." That is not a casual breakup. That is someone packing their bags, loading the car, and backing out of the driveway while maintaining eye contact.

Wecht did not name specific party leaders or elected officials in his statement, though he painted a broad picture of the problem. "Nazi tattoos, jihadist chants, intimidation and attacks at synagogues, and other hateful anti-Jewish invective and actions are minimized, ignored, and even coddled," he wrote. "Acquiescence to Jew-hatred is now disturbingly common among activists, leaders, and even many elected officials in the Democratic Party." He then added, "I can no longer abide by this. So, I won't. I am no longer registered within any political party."

For context on why this is deeply personal for Wecht: he married his wife in 1998 at Pittsburgh's Tree of Life Congregation, where he also served on the board of trustees. That same synagogue was the site of the deadliest antisemitic attack in American history, when a gunman killed 11 people and wounded many others. So when Wecht talks about threats to the Jewish community, he is not speaking in abstractions.

This also is not exactly a new theme for the justice. After the Tree of Life massacre, Wecht publicly called for Rep. Ilhan Omar to be "disciplined" over antisemitic comments. More recently, he joined U.S. District Judge Roy Altman in Pittsburgh for a discussion about Altman's book, "Israel on Trial." Altman has been a vocal critic of college protesters who he says were "brainwashed" in the wake of the October 2023 Hamas attack that killed over 1,200 Israeli citizens. "I was shocked that these people were blaming the victims, that suddenly the Jews were the oppressors," Altman said.

As for what this means for Wecht's role on the bench, he insists nothing changes. He pledged to remain an "impartial justice" and noted that his new voter registration simply reflects the independence he says he has always maintained in his judicial work. "My voting registration now reflects my independence as well," he wrote.

So there you have it. A lifelong Democrat, elected as a Democrat, re-elected as a Democrat just this year, now officially registered as nothing. When the guy who used to help run your party decides he would rather be politically homeless than stay in the building, maybe it is time to check what is going on inside.
