Outgoing Sen. Cornyn Spends Morning Trolling MAGA on X

Nothing says "I'm handling my primary loss well" quite like waking up and spending your entire morning posting provocative articles on social media. That is exactly how outgoing Texas Sen. John Cornyn decided to kick off July 2, 2026, and boy did it go about as well as you would expect.

As The American Tribune reported, Cornyn, who lost his reelection bid to Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in the GOP primary, decided to go on a full posting spree that included sharing a Karl Rove op-ed calling VP JD Vance's "Heritage Americans" concept an "un-American idea," a New York Times piece titled "How a Nation of Immigrants Traces Its Roots," and a Politico article referring to the SAVE America Act as the "GOP's dirty little secret" that "can't even pass the House."

Three posts. Three publications that MAGA voters absolutely love to see shared by their Republican senators. Truly a masterclass in reading the room.

According to Mediaite, when conservatives predictably pushed back on his SAVE Act post, Cornyn responded with "Absurd. You just can't handle the facts." He then posted a clip from A Few Good Men featuring Jack Nicholson's famous "You can't handle the truth!" line. Because nothing screams serious statesman like posting movie clips during a legislative debate.

The Cornyn vs. Paxton primary was a brutal affair. The Republican establishment considered Cornyn the stronger general election candidate, while Paxton carried a suitcase full of scandals, lawsuits, and a pending messy divorce. Despite all that baggage, MAGA supporters stuck with Paxton for his alignment with President Trump's America First agenda. Trump initially declined to endorse either candidate, sparking rumors he would back Cornyn, but ultimately endorsed Paxton just days before the runoff when polls showed the attorney general pulling ahead.

On the Democratic side, State Rep. James Talarico defeated Rep. Jasmine Crockett by a comfortable margin. After her loss, Crockett took to X and called on followers to "remain united" and "rally around our nominees."

Now here is where things get spicy. When Mediaite reached out to Cornyn for comment on his posts, he declined to answer. He did, however, weigh in on current polling showing Talarico and Paxton are tied in the general election race. "I'm not gonna say I told you so, but... Ominous for down ballot races," Cornyn said.

So to recap: he would not explain his own posts, but he absolutely could not resist a victory lap about polling that suggests his replacement might lose. Subtle.

The comment section under his posts was about as friendly as a cactus handshake. One user called him a "backstabbing POS," while another going by Texas Buckeye wrote, "This is exactly why we voted you out. You don't follow the will of the people, you think you're smarter than us. That's the problem when people spend too much time in Congress."

Say what you will about the man, but Cornyn has found his second act: professional bridge burner. And he seems to be enjoying every minute of it.
