A sweeping Border Patrol enforcement operation along the Yuma, Arizona sector of the U.S. border with Mexico resulted in 52 arrests over just five days, with 36 of those detained found to be driving semi-trucks illegally. The operation, dubbed "Operation Checkmate," represents one of the most targeted crackdowns yet on unauthorized commercial vehicle operators, as The American Tribune reported.

The Trump Administration has placed particular emphasis on rooting out illegal aliens from the commercial trucking industry, partly through enforcement of rules requiring all CDL holders to demonstrate English proficiency. Those requirements have become a powerful tool for identifying and removing unauthorized drivers from the nation's highways.

According to a press release from the Department of Homeland Security, the operation ran from May 11 through May 15 and was specifically designed to "enhance public safety through enforcement of immigration statutes aimed at the detection and arrest of illegal aliens operating commercial motor vehicles."

Perhaps the most striking detail from the announcement is that 29 of the 36 arrested truckers actually held commercial driver's licenses issued by states including California, New York, Washington, and Virginia. Three of the arrested drivers had no driver's license at all. The fact that blue states have been handing out CDLs to people who aren't legally present in the country is a central grievance for the current administration.

As for where the arrested individuals came from, the numbers tell a clear story. Thirty of the 36 truckers were Indian nationals. The remaining six hailed from Mexico, El Salvador, and Russia.

DHS also pointed the finger squarely at the previous administration, noting that most of those arrested held Employment Authorization Documents obtained during the Biden years that are no longer valid. All individuals were processed under federal law and are slated for deportation.

Acting Chief Patrol Agent Dustin W. Caudle of the Yuma Sector framed the operation as a matter of public safety. "Operation Checkmate reflects our commitment to safeguarding communities and roads from unlawfully present drivers who pose significant risks to public safety," he said. Caudle added that his agents remain on patrol daily to "stop these individuals and prevent more deadly crashes from occurring on the road across the United States."

The DHS statement wrapped up by crediting President Trump's leadership for a final rule from the Department of Transportation aimed at preventing unqualified foreign nationals from obtaining licenses to operate commercial trucks and buses. The agency emphasized that the Border Patrol is collaborating with federal partners to enforce immigration law and restore safety to the national transportation system, calling the effort part of building "the most secure border in 50 years" while eliminating a key incentive for illegal immigration.
