Oh, the irony is absolutely DRIPPING off this one, folks.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani wanted his wife to roll into Syria and Lebanon with a full police escort this September. There's just one tiny problem: the NYPD said absolutely not. As first reported by Trending Politics, the department flat out rejected the idea of sending officers to two nations on the State Department's "Do Not Travel" list for a personal family vacation.
Let that sink in. The mayor who spent 2020 screaming about defunding and dismantling the NYPD suddenly wanted those very same cops to follow his wife, Rama Duwaji, into war zones.
An NYPD spokesperson told Fox News that the department does not dispatch officers to countries carrying Level 4 travel advisories for personal trips. Period. End of story.
But here's where it gets really juicy. City Hall actually tried to get ahead of this by claiming the whole arrangement was the NYPD's idea! Mamdani's spokeswoman Dora Pekec reportedly told outlets that the first lady's security detail would join her overseas, and that it came at the "strong recommendation" of the police department.
That story fell apart faster than a cheap umbrella in a Manhattan thunderstorm.
Once the NYPD publicly contradicted City Hall's version of events, Mamdani scrambled for cover. When PIX11 confronted him about the conflicting accounts on Tuesday, the mayor chalked it all up to a staff "miscommunication." Sure, buddy. Just a little mix up about sending armed detectives into two of the most dangerous countries on the planet.
Scott Munro, president of the NYPD Detectives' Endowment Association, was absolutely furious. He declared that detectives put themselves in danger every single day protecting New Yorkers and that the union would never stay quiet if members were ordered to travel to a dangerous foreign nation for anything besides a legitimate law enforcement or intelligence operation. He also pointedly reminded everyone that those detectives are needed right here in the city, fighting crime.
Now let's rewind to 2020, when Mamdani was singing a very different tune about the police department he now leads as mayor. Back then, he posted on X that there was "no negotiating" with the NYPD, calling it "wicked" and "corrupt" while demanding it be defunded and dismantled. He accused officers of racism, called the department a threat to public safety, and proclaimed that "queer liberation means defund the police."
Fast forward six years, and suddenly those same officers he wanted gone are supposed to risk their lives babysitting a personal vacation to Syria and Lebanon? Both countries carry the highest possible travel warning from the State Department due to terrorism threats.
The sheer audacity of this situation is almost too perfect. You can't make this stuff up. A politician who built part of his brand on tearing down law enforcement got caught trying to use that very institution as his family's personal travel security. And when the cops said no thanks, his office tried to pin the whole scheme on them.
Politics in New York City, ladies and gentlemen. Never a dull moment.
